    • Lota. Masking in that and it's just 1 small part

      • Does anyone have an extra drop tank or a pair of drop tanks for the F4 Phantom that they'd like to sell or don't need. I am configuring them to a turbine powered L39 Albatros which did not come with the drop tanks. The scale of the turbine is a little larger, but the Freewing Phantom tanks will work.
        Thanks guys!

        • I do but I don't think I have a box. The next time I go into the attic (where they are) I'll look.

          • Take one step forward two steps back. Removed the masking tape and will have some touch-up to do. Red came out ok put need to paint white back in places. Wasn't sure this would work as it's tedious to mask. Want to keep all the paint per my scale colors and the Callie graphics were a little off. It will be fixed just more detail hours.

            Fighter pilot,
I have some extra F4 tanks that Davegee sent me. If you pm your mailing address I can send to you next week.
            Best Regards, Rex

            • Isn't that always the way it goes painting over foam! I feel your pain and frustration. My friends who did cruises on aircraft carriers have told me that by the end of a long cruise, the corrosion detail have roughly painted on the aircraft where the paint chipped off and they look gawdawful in some cases. You're not alone with having to repaint these parts. When you're done, I don't suspect most people or judges would even see what it looks like now.

              Hang in there!

              • Thanks Dave,

I used the baby powder and it works well but I pressed the teeth mask with a popsicle stick and it stuck to the underneath paint. Goes with learning new ways. The baby powder works great if not in small spaces. Thinking about your 47 sliding canopy and I think a jack screw servo would be best, It is fairly small and gives a direct push/pull open or closing. small enough to fit underneath and not restrict electronics. A 3d slider track with a slider bar would work. The slider could be designed to hook to the jack screw and be part of the turtledeck canopy brace that slides with the canopy.
I guess if the navy had to touch up paint that makes mine more believable, that's my story anyway. LOL
                Best Regards, Rex

Plenty of ideas! Get to it, what's stopping you. Enquiring minds want to know.

A carriage for the canopy base and much trial and error fitment.

All doable depending on your will to do it.

That's beautiful work, Elbee. The P-47 wouldn't be all that different using a similar rack/pinion idea.

                        • The High School kids have come thru again. I need to go to school and pick up today. A little gluing to do but pieces are all there. Don't forget to ask your schools if they need projects to learn making 3d parts. The kids get to see finished parts at the final assembly.
So progress is progressing and even using baby powder paint still pulls up requiring touch-up between color lines. Not much but a headache. Best Regards, Rex

                          • After picking up the ladders and tank drop, I tore everything off that didn't look like ladders. sanded, primed, painted silver then a couple coats of hair spray. Next after drying I painted the yellow. Will let this dry overnight then take a toothbrush and water and rub the yellow down in wear spots. Also installed the fuselage mount for the centerline tank.
                            Best Regards, Rex

                              Great work Rex.

                              Ladders look very cool.

                              All coming along nicely.

Lots of little things getting done. Going to paint the red on gear doors and stab tips today. Opening canopies are great but the angles of the sills to the fuselage are off in the STL. very tedious but using heat gun lightly I am bending bending to conform, takes time and going slow.
                                Best Regards, Rex

Some photos of one of our favorite Phantom Drivers.

Note the non-slip on the ladder rungs.

                                  • Robin Olds, I have looked at his Phantom at the Airforce Museum many times. Just what I need, close up of the ladders, Thanks Elbee.

                                    • I took Elbee's photo and hopefully made a good impression of the real ladders. What do you all think, good or bad?

                                        • Elbee,
The hair spray coats between silver and yellow allows chipping to look real instead of putting silver over the yellow. The black steps are from 220 wet/dry paper. gives the right texture. This completes the ladders, so they get put away until needed.
