  • Right now I am liking the Tarantula printer.

How come during the two build videos I have seen, no one opens the EDF hatch to show the insides? Is it a secret?

    • Also looking at 3D printers. I'm leaning toward the Prusa i3 Mk3 in the kit version at $749.00 USD as I am not entirely fluent in cad/cam and like the idea of building the thing. A downside is it is back ordered until late April-early May. But check it out. https://www.prusa3d.com/original-prusa-i3-mk3/

      • 3D printing is one of the most enjoyable things i have gotten involved with and i have been printing for several years, however, its not for the faint of heart. You don't just download a file and press print. The learning cure for getting good prints from whatever printer you buy can be long and frustrating. I believe last month, the AMA had an article in their magazine about how 3D printing applies to our hobby. The article made it sound like all you have to do is download the files from the appropriate source and press print. As i said, this is so not true. The other thing to consider is that if you don't have the ability to design your own parts, you are stuck with printing only parts that someone else designed. There are a few web sites like thingverse where people upload their designs and you can download the STL files for free. There are quite a lot of airplane parts, but again you're stuck with whatever someone else designed. I would love to find out how many of the printers sold in the last few years are just sitting idle because of the expectation of just pressing "print". If there is interest, i'll be happy to add more about the process and the problems involved

        • I hope to be diving in soon and I know there is going to be a massive learning curve. I would love to know more about the process and problems. Maybe a separate thread would be appropriate if there isn't already one?

            • I think if a thread is started on 3DP it would draw interest. That’s what this forum is about. It would be welcomed by many, especially if the content is understandable.

              Go for it!

I made a more general 3D printing thread for people to discuss anything 3D printer related for the RC hobby:

                      • My freind Manny asked for pics of the EDF bay and motion promply responded with one. Taking your question into consideration I suppose its a build vidio not an unbuild one ?
I will try to fish it out and post it here.

That would be awesome if we could get them sooner than mid-April..

I can only comment on the stock 80mm fw (outrunner) fan vs 80 fms (inrunner) in my F5 (both 12 blade), both 6s The difference was night and day. Granted the fms 80 is an in-runner. Now, the fms 90mm is an out-runner 12 blade but I've read the blade pitch is a little lower than the fw 12b, so folks think it might yield better performance but I do not have one, afaik this is unconfirmed.

The thing is that the F-4 90mm is a 9-blade system, and it's been confirmed that it is no slouch. I have the 9-b 80s in my A-10. They struck a perfect match. Going slow, then going vertical while punching it, the 14lb bird actually seems to accelerate for a second or 2 going straight up. Besides it's lighter (like the fms fans).

Some prefer the older, 12b 6s system for the swoosh sound. I went with the 12b but 8s system because I wanted the weight and I heard it was ~25 mph faster than the 9b 6s. Also, the fact that it's only 70.00 more made the decision easy.

Thanks for confirming that my decision not to pursue 3d printing was correct. After reading on it, I felt it was better for me to just pay someone for the parts I need. Maybe in a few years it will get to a point where it is plug-n-play. I'm 59 and fix a lot of my own stuff (house repairs, cars, appliances). The savings I realize make it easy for to justify my RC addiction. I don't need something else that requires TLC and a learning curve.

That would be nice, but unless you can put another 10 or so knots on the Slow Boat From China, I think we're stuck waiting until mid April. It's only about a month away now, maybe 5 weeks. I've waited this long for a Phantom; another months isn't going to hurt.... much. LOL
