I have the Opterra, too. In the beginning, it would launch in "launch" mode no problem but then, as time went by, it stopped working. In that time, I did nothing to the Rx or the plane. I thought mine was odd and unique but many other people have reported a similar occurrence. I've since replaced the AR636 with a Lemon Rx and put in some reflex on the gear switch for the launch. It flies even better now without a stabilizer.
The "launch" mode on the Opterra isn't quite the same as the "recovery" mode on the Admiral or HobbyEagle type of stabilizers. I think the algorithms used are different. The Opterra's Rx sets level when initialized on the bench every time the plane is powered up. I don't know how the Admiral sets level. My HobbyEagle's recovery mode had to be calibrated once via the internal menu when the plane was level on the bench. Like I said, I could never get recovery mode to work.

I'm using an Admiral 6 channel stabilizing receiver. I've seen hand launches of an Opterra with AS3X in SAFE mode with the pilot actually not holding the transmitter. He launches, the Opterra flies straight out in a slight climb, he then picks up the transmitter and switches out of SAFE mode. I was hoping I could launch the P-15 in recovery mode and that would hold the plane in the proper attitude until I got my right hand on the A/E stick. Recovery mode apparently cuts down the control throw however and I wasn't able to add enough up elevon after launch to overcome the diving tendency of the plane so I got a couple of unintended landings with no damage. I had a helper do the launch and I had my hand on the stick, but still couldn't pull out of the launch dive. Subsequent launches using just stabilization went just fine when thrown by my helper or by me so I'm not going to play around with it anymore. I agree, rock solid flyer.

Are you using some sort of stabilizer? I use the HobbyEagle line of stabs and those with "recover" mode have never worked out for me. Even after calibrating it for level, the plane goes nuts (plane heads for dirt) when I throw the switch for recovery (or "auto-balance). I no longer use that mode at all.
I'm using a HobbyEagle stab in my Lippy with only the rotary to set gain on the fly (no modes capable). I also have a little "reflex" on the gear switch for the launch. Rock solid flyer.Leave a comment:

Launching in recovery mode did NOT work out well. No damage though. Launches OK with just some up elevon trim as others have said. The yellow helps with orientation very nicely. Great flying little plane. The stock power system and 3S 1300 mah pack provide me with all the speed and duration I can handle with this tiny airframe.Leave a comment:

Finally threw mine together.Stock power system, Turnigy Graphene, 1300 3S, Admiral 6 channel stabilizing receiver with "recovery" along with some up elevon set up on a switch for launch, and two more flight modes for cruise speed and high speed. Just have to position the receiver and check the CG in the morning and I hope to get the maiden flight in tomorrow. I did my maiden flight today with a normal AR6600T and wow! This bird is amazing!
Used 35C 1800 nvision packs and had a friend from my club launch the untrimmed bird the first time.
I used a launch mode that gives me +1.5mm elevator and high rates (low rates of the manual) and I also used a throttle/elevator mix that I had seen in this thread that gave me also +elevator.
The first launch went perfect and I could trim everything but at full throttle it really climbs a lot. I did then try to hand launch it myself on the 2nd flight but threw it so badly that it flipped upside down... luckily I could easily recover it and climb inverted :Whew:LOL. On full throttle it would still climb a lot even after using have of the input in the throttle/elevator mix.
So on the third flight the launch was already almost good and reversing the throttle/elevator mix to give me 2% - elevator keeps the plan almost level when going full beans.
The 4th flight was a really nice launch (figured it out how to trow it finally :D) and just a pleasure to fly... this bird just looks awesome during flight and is amazing slow or fast.
This is my first EDF plane and I'm super happy with it :Cool:

I had to glue a piece of 1/8" plywood back near the cg and above the battery. The battery fits just fine. The RX sits where I can just reach the gain controls with a small, long screw driver that I made. The RX is just a small bit ahead of the CG, which is OK. DocLeave a comment:

I'm happy to join the P.15 owners with my very first EDF and plane from Freewing/MotionRC.
I did order my P.15 together with the Admiral RX600SP but also got an AR6600T to use if needed.
I'm currently not sure if I should set up the plane with the RX600SP since it should be placed level near the CG and my 1300 and 1800 packs are rather long (the 1800 pack is 110mm).
Is somebody using the RX600SP with gyro enabled without gluing a piece of foam/wood into the plane?

I haven't flown it yet because I had a heart attack while working on it 5 days ago. No reflection on the planes assembly, you understand. I repainted it with a less brilliant camo.
