Official Freewing Vulcan 70mm EDF Jet Thread

I’m the guy using two 6S 2700s in parallel in the Avanti. Have to stack them to be able to push them all the way back. Total weight for both batts and parallel cable is 860g. Probably too heavy for the Vulcan I’m thinking.

Up till now I’ve been trying to minimize acquiring too many different sizes of lipos. The 64mm jets both take one 2700 and the Avanti takes two ;) However, I’ve decided “Screw it - life’s too short. Get the damn batteries lol “

Not gonna lie, the Avanti still kinda scares me. Probably should have gone the Vulcan route first.

Hello!!! I use two 2600mAh 6s batteries in parallel in an FMS FUTURA V3, and if you keep the battery position in mind so the center of gravity is in the right place, there's no major problem. I also have an FMS FUTURA in the 4s version with a 64mm EDF and an EFLITE VIPER, also in the 4s version with a 64mm EDF. I've used two 1500mAh 4s batteries in parallel in both, and they fly equally well. I just need to move the batteries back a bit to keep the center of gravity in the right place in both planes.

Keep it up, you'll see that the VULCAN is a very good airplane. It's very well designed, and the engines, both 4s and 6s, are more than adequate for the weight and size of the plane.

I saw this video where he flew the Vulcan with a 6S 6700mah battery - that’s gotta be big and heavy:

I didn’t see the battery compartment dimensions in the user manual.
The 6700 pack is 54mm x 50mm x 150mm and weighs 835g.
Two of my 2700s are 72mm x 45mm x 150mm and weigh 860g.
Guess I’ll do a fit test when it arrives, side by side, stacked, neither …

What size lipos (6S) do you guys use, and how long are the flight times?
I'm looking for 3 to 3.5 minutes, minimum, with enough left over for a go-around or two.
Are 3300s worth it at all ? I have some old Century helis that take 3300s ... ;)

I use Power Hobby 5000mAh batteries. They weigh 545 to 575g, the older ones were lighter weight. I have a dozen of them I fly in many planes and really like them but they are expensive, $120 but they have a military discount. If I was buying today I'd get SMCs, they seem to be good batteries for the money.

I get 6-7 minutes on the 5000's.

Hello!!!! That's one of the things that surprised me most about this plane: not having to detach any servos from the foam to replace them if necessary. I think the servo attachment system with the plastic plates is a real success on FREEWING's part. As is the wire it comes with to run all the servo wiring from the tail assembly to the nose of the plane, to connect them to the receiver. These are small details that make the difference to me. The issue of the size and weight of the batteries: moving outside the recommended weights will mean the plane will need more speed to fly and will be heavier. Therefore, when it comes to landing, it will do so with more speed and inertia due to the extra weight and will glide less, nothing that can't be solved with proper use of the flaps and reverse thrust upon landing.

I agree. The recommended battery is 624g which I feel is heavy for this plane.

I was going to get HRBs but they wanted $80 to ship them. A few others were out of stock or not available with EC5s. Found these instead, free shipping …

650 and 800g. Quite heavy. I’ve had good results from older CHL. I don’t buy HRB, they are low performance.

Yeah, the weights aren’t optimal but hopefully they’ll get me started. Thanks for the heads up on the HRBs - never tried them.

SMC are very good and I like Liperior as an everyday battery. I posted a link to my favorite, the Power Hobby but don’t recommend them because of their price. But they are light, the weight of 3500’s but perform as 5000-5200.

Wow those are expensive. So many choices … I will check SMC and Liperior for the next buy - thanks.

SMC are very highly regarded in the various forums and they have HV packs which are higher voltage than standard 6S packs giving more speed. I don't have anySMC packs as I have a lot of what I like BUT if I was swapping brands it would be to SMC. Here are a couple that would work well in the 6S Vulcan.

HV and not too heavy. HCL-HV2 Flight 22.8V/6S-4000mAh-90C

Not HV and a good weight and price. HCL-HP 22.2V-3400mAh-80C Flight pack

I like Liperior, excellent batteries at a great price. Typically they are under rated and a 30C pack performs like a 80C from other makers. Because of this they are a little heavier if directly compared to some other brands.

I've never ordered from RCBattery.com - glad to have a positive reference now. Good prices on their adapters and cables/leads/accessories too. Better than ProgressiveRC, for the items they carry.

I've been hearing more and more about SMC lately - could just be me being late to the game, again.

Everything has shipped, except the CNHL 4000mAh lipos - those are going to take longer evidently.
So, I purchased two of the Liperior 3300mAh packs, along with some EC5 connectors to replace the XT90s, from RCBattery.com
Looking forward to testing out 3300, 4000, and 5000 sizes at the field :) The ungodly heatwave may be breaking here, finally ....

They are hinges if you don't like the type that the plane comes with.

BTW, that's not a really big box. THIS is a BIG box.

Hell ya! That's a big box, and a beautiful aircraft ! Electric ? When's the maiden ?

Really nice build quality on the Vulcan. Only two pushrods need adjusting - rudder and right aileron. Probably only 1/2 - 1 turn, if that.

I do have to remove the blue box and lengthen the flaps wire. The LemonRx has Ch6-10 on the opposite side of TAER&G so it won't reach once the blue box is pushed all the way back.

Reverse thrust lead (Ch9) is also on the opposite side, as well as the front steering servo (Ch10). Ch7 is stabilization on/off and Ch8 is gyro master gain. All 10 channels in use.

Copied the Avanti model setup in the Tx, then tweaked it, so that went pretty quick.

Calibrated the throttle. The beeps from the motor are super quiet - at first I thought something was up with the ESC.

It's alive ! Just need to lengthen the flaps wire, mount the LemonRx and tidy up the wiring.
