  • Freewing P-51 w/MrRCSound build

I recently got the Freewing P-51 without the sound because I thought I might use MrRCSound instead.  I have a Flyzone Beaver that I installed sound in and I made it so I could remove the sound controller if I ever wanted to use it in another plane.  This plane seemed a good choice as they were selling it with Freewing sound as an option.
I have just started the build but wanted to show what I was attempting.  I have epoxied the TT-25 speaker on one side of the fuselage, and I will put a bass transducer opposite that on the other side.  The access grill at the middle, bottom of the plane makes for super easy access to this area and a great place to Velcro the controller board.  I know the Freewing sound version has a speaker at each grill, but the MrRCSound speakers need to attach to the foam body itself as they resonate through the body cavity.
I have purchased a JST extension for the battery connection, and a servo extension for the throttle connection on the receiver.  I'll run these up through to the front of the plane. Although the MrRCSound sysem uses the planes battery for power, I'm going to go ahead and utilize a separate 1300mah battery just like the Freewing version does.  I think this will help with offsetting the weight of the two speakers out towards the back of the plane.
More to come.  Just wanted to see if it could be done and how she would sound.  More later.

      Hi retiredflyer
I strongly suggest not putting in a second battery it truly is not needed it just adds unnecessary weight gaining you nothing in return. What most people are doing on this plane for installation of the transducers is to put in a small 1\4" piece of foam and gluing this over the grills then gluing the tt-25 on to that in both grill areas. Doing this will make any weight issues to equal out causing very little cg problems. This system uses less than an amp of power and you will loose less than 30 seconds of flight time.
      Hope this helps Brad

Very interesting! Now that I have already epoxied the first transducer to the inside of the fuselage out back, I guess I'll leave that one there. Based on your suggestion I can put the foam piece over the front grill and put the bass transducer on that. I have the control board attached to the back grill for easy access.
Thanks for the alternate installation method, especially if I can do without the extra battery altogether. Appreciate it.

Glad you do, I'm looking forward to flying it in the spring.  I'm waiting for some electronics to complete my build.  Come on UPS guy!  I'm waiting....I shoveled the driveway for you!

                RE: Freewing P-51 w/MrRCSound build

Just ordered the Freewing P-51 yesterday along with the MrRCSound module with an added bass transducer so I'll be following your progress as I eagerly await mine. I already have a MrRCSound with 2 tt-25s in a Hangar9 87" Cub I converted to electric so I'm pretty confident this is gonna be sweet.  Only unknown is what the bass transducer will add.  I can't tell you how many videos and forum posts I watched and read before deciding on the Freewing over the FMS  Also ordered a set of Tundra Tires for the cub that I hope I'll be able to adapt and get better results on grass landings.  Anyways, enough rambling and keep us posted on your project/

                Thanks

                  RE: Freewing P-51 w/MrRCSound build

Thought I'd throw in a couple of pictures on my installation so far:

First one is the tt-25 mounted to the sound board I made from some 3/16" Depron scrap I had laying around. I just pressed the plastic speaker grill down on the Depron to mark where it needed to be cut.  I also spread a thin coat of 30 minute epoxy where the tt-25 would be placed and let it dry.  I also punched a small hole right in the middle for pressure relief.  I then peeled the protective paper off and placed it on the epoxy with a small weight that stayed on overnight.  It seems stuck very well and I've used this method on my Cub with success.

Next I attached this sassembly using small screws right into the holes already there for the stock speaker

Finally I decided to mount the control board on the battery hatch cover (at least at this point)

Everything seems to fit and after reattaching the plastic grill I gave it a try.....:exclamation:LOUD:exclamation:.........and that was with just this one speaker!  I bought a bass transducer for the rear but it might be too heavy (almost twice the tt-25 wt.)  So, I'm very happy with this upgrade so far.  BTW, I do have the annoying buzz others have but maybe some ferrite rings will solve that. Also had to make up some jst extenders for the speakers.

                    Hey rc-eflyer,
I like your work. I have been at a standstill for a few weeks on my P-51. Just got all my parts and will continue this week. I will post some photos of mine too so we can compare. I will be putting the bass transducer up front as I already epoxied the TT-25 out back. I also have the controller board out back, so we do have some differences.
I like the looks of your foam board in the front. Not sure how I'm going to do mine yet. I was just going to epoxy a 1/4 inch piece of foam right to the back of the grill and epoxy the transducer to that.
                    More to come!

Thanks Retiredflyer, always more ways than one to skin a cat I guess ;) . I'll really be interested in where your cg falls with that bass transducer back there. I installed the receiver last night and tried to tidy up all the wires. Man, the wiring is somewhat of a nightmare .

                        Hey Guys:
Have you seen the new Freewing P51D, Bud Anderson (Old Crow) edition?
Its the paint scheme that I'd love to have but I notice is slightly more expensive and has a slightly different power/ESC arrangement. My biggest disappointment is that they decided to put a two blade prop on it!  NO NO!!
Maybe as an option in the kit, but not for us purists!  I'm wondering if I can get the stock prop/base plate/nose cone from Iron Ass spare parts and put if on instead?

                        What do you think?

Back into the Mustang build...decided to put both speakers in the rear area. Looking at the wiring, it was easier than making a longer connection for one of the speakers. Each speaker is attached to opposite sides of the fuse, and the controller is right under them. I only needed an extension for the power and the control servo (which will be the throttle).
Man, what a bunch of wires. I just hooked up and bound the receiver last night to try all the control surfaces and gear. SWEET! Love the gear sequencing and those super bright lights. Had to adjust the main gear doors a bit for full closures and no gap. Today I will attempt the BEC, and the gyro install.

Know what ya mean bout the wires:dodgy:. I had to move my receiver after I had it all nice and tidy :@ . Got it all in and put the wing on........no tail retract :( . Got that straightened out.....right aileron started acting flakey :dodgy: . Traced that down to the connector itself but couldn't get the the pins out to inspect. I'll just buy a new y-connector as I would never fly it with shaky ailerons(or any other control for that matter). Anyway back on topic....do you think that's gonna be a CG problem or just use a bigger(heavier) battery to compensate? I haven't checked mine yet to see how my setup is gonna balance.

I hear ya, those were my thoughts first time I picked mine up and that wes without the rear speaker yet . Mines being held up until I get another y-cable as the supplied on for the ailerons was acting flakey. I did get to fly my Hangar 9 Cub with the other MrRCSound system I have Sunday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StJfLophOp8 ...just a short clip with a few flybys and trying out the new Tundra tires.

OK, finished with all the electronics, finally.  Like I said, a wiring nightmare.  Took a while to route and wire tie all the wiring in a nice, neater looking configuration.  The speakers are both in the rear compartment along with the controller board that is velcroed to the hatch.  I installed the Eagle gyro to the battery hatch cover and that seems to be a good place.  It is epoxied to the hatch with enough slack in the wiring to open and close the battery cover.  The receiver is on a side wall in the back of the battery area and the UBEC is underneath in the front speaker access area along with the satellite receiver.
Everything is working so now it's time for the final assembly and CG tests!  Can't wait to see how that works out!

Boy you are putting my wiring jobs to shame! Looks great!

I'm anxiously following your progress here, as I am going to be addressing this exact same issue.  While eflyer put his controller and transducer in the front, but closer to the CG (with possible second transducer or bass unit to go in back), you have placed virtually everything fairly far behind the CG point, although you do have the gyro up front (not much weight there though, of course).  So, let's see how the CG turns out, and then of course, how she sounds and flies!  I am looking at the new Freewing "Old Crow" P-51D coming out soon, but I think it's pretty much identical, with the exception of the 80A ESC.  Keep us posted!
Any day you can fly is a good day!  :D

Yep, great job! I'm also eagerly awaiting your cg tests. If you're good I might be able to use that bass speaker after all :D
