    RE: Freewing P-51 w/MrRCSound build

Okay, I still need to do some weathering with the airbrush, but I decided to at least take it out to the front yard today to shoot a short video. A bit breezy out there to take her up on a maiden flight, but it will be soon! Here is a link to video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4eHl1oPyMI

    I think it sounds great!

Looks and sounds great SR!  Mine is nearing completion, as I had a little more work to do, converting her from Iron Ass to Old Crow.  Interesting that they don't have the stripes on the bottom wing.  See you went the 4 blade as well, good for you!
As for the spinner, I made my own out of Iron Ass's

            Turned out great!
So, hopefully, by the end of Monday I should be able to fire mine up as well.
We had a bit of a wind storm blow through here today, started warm and sunny then the Cody wind arrived.  Its one of those that almost blows you off your feet.

Great job on the spinner. I took the easy way out for now and just modified the Old Crow spinner and cut for two more blades. Not a perfect fit. I still have the Iron Ass spinner if I want to try and paint the yellow stripe. Can't wait to see yours!

                Thanks Dave!
I just posted some on All Us Newbies, But, well what the Heck, I'll post them here as well

This is as of this morning, still a ways to go but she's really starting to shape up!
Just giving her some time to dry again, then back at it.
Weather is shaping up to be nice today, I might take a break and go flying

Sure looks great, I really like what ya did on the exhaust stacks. Would love to see a close-up if possible. Those dark grey stock stacks are a sore spot for me. I even ordered a spare exhaust set to experiment with but haven't had a chance to yet.

Hey Steve, I hear you.  I hand painted them, the stack covers are hand painted with Testors Model master Chrome paint and the stacks themselves are painted with Humbrol rust color, although I'm sure Testors would do just as well, I just happened to have a can that I've been using for the last 20 years or so, lasts a long time if all you paint with that color is exhaust stacks. Painted the chrome first, then the rust, flipped her over and did the bottom as well.  I agree with you, its ugly when you leave it just stock.

Here she is in all her glory!

Hey guys, since this is quickly becoming Freewing Mustang Central, I'm thinking this is a great thing!!
Any info anyone can supply on the Mustang, lets add it here where its easy to find.
Now, I have a question that I also posted on All Us Newbies...
Is there a way to align the main gear, my starboard gear is angled outwards and she wants to bind, making the plane dog track when she's slow taxiing, any advice?
By the way, I see I have to adjust that black line, don't know how I missed that!

Hey Grossman, what scale did you buy the "Old Crow" graphics from Callie in because they are perfect for the freewing!!? I am planning on redoing my "Iron Ass" in the "Cripes A' Mighty" livery? I haven't looked at our scale size, not sure of our plane sizes to scale for Callie? Your "Old Crow" is sweet! and the decals look perfect!

they're 1/8th scale and I also ordered the nomenclature set for her as well, then you can stencil as much as you want. The Old Crow decals by themselves were $29 including shipping, you can't beat that!
Oh, by the way, I'll never complain about a nose decal application again! Putting the red and yellow square decal on the nose is a real challenge, good thing the decal material stretches, its like very thing rubber.

By the way, I have painted details on all my planes.  Since they sit around waiting to be flown, they may as well look the great models I used to have as a kid while they do nothing.
My Waco engine got a redo a couple of weeks ago.  A little red paint and a silver paint pen and , well see what you think........
So the wings come back off and the sound system gets calibrated.  I have a note into MRC about the retract mechanism, hopefully get some guidance there.  It seems that the replacement doesn't have the shaft in it, so there must be something that holds it in place.  As I couldn't remove the black casing around the mechanism itself, I don't know if its in there or maybe it has to be retracted.  Anyway, I'll find out today.

Hey guys and girls, back again.
Anyway, got the sound system calibrated and two coats of Minwax on her.
Just thought I'd pass on something that I found handy.
After Lon's unfortunate argument with his propeller, I decided that one more safety barrier was a good thing, so I made the mix switch (back right on a Dx8) the kill switch for the throttle.  Engage the switch (position 1) and you're good to go, disengage (position 0) and no throttle!   Now, here's the bonus for all us sound system users, that switch will also turn off the engine.  You hit it and it's just like shutting down the real thing, don't have to mess with your throttle trim, to start her up, hit the switch again and off you go!
                              Try it you'll like it!

Yeah, I will eventually, I put 15 hours into her on Saturday, probably another 8 on Sunday and at least 4 today, have to spend a little time with the wife!
Also got some flying in this morning, burned through 6 batteries on my Pandora, so its been an RC weekend.

                                    Hey Gman,
I have my Dx9 also set up with a throttle kill, however, once I activated it on shutdown the MrRCSound will not come back on after I restart the motor with a fresh battery. Seems the removing and re-attaching the battery overrides the kill switch. I have to have the kill switch in normal run mode BEFORE I hook up the power or the sound won't work. Sort of negates the reason for the switch unfortunately.
                                    Addicted to planes!

                                      Really!
I have the DX 8 and I just went into the throttle kill and assigned Mix1 and she's good to go, did it with all my planes and it works fine, should be a way to do that with the DX9.

I got some of my silver paints today, thanks Lauren for the suggestion, its great paint.  Started blocking in the wings, giving some of the panels a slightly different shade the lfaps will be done with the brightest silver as they were bare metal on the real P51's.
Just waiting for the decal set to mask off the front nose, just don't want to paint over too much of the red.  Invasion stripes of the weekend project.  Most were painted over after D Day, leaving the undersides and some of the fuse stripes on.  Interesting that Bud's plane has two black and two white stripes on the fuse, the forward-most white stripe is missing.
Hey SR, don't forget the white wall tires Bud hand painted on the real Old Crow!!

                                      Grossman56
I'll take a pic of the bottom of the wing and post it.  As for the whitewall tires, many references I see indicate that they were only on the P51B.  Should I?  They are kinda cool!
I have a book that I've had for probably 20 years with Old Crow on the cover, "P51 Mustang " by Robert Grinsell with illustrations by Rikyu Watanabe.  This guys art is just amazing and his attention to detail is astounding!  He shows the D model with whitewalls, I'll see if I can scan it.

Can someone clarify if the "Old Crow" D version that Bud flew in the winter of 44 had full invasion stripes on the lower wing? According to his website page http://www.cebudanderson.com/p51ddetailpage.htm the P-51D version only had one black stripe on the bottom of each wing. I believe he would have flown the P-51B during D-Day? in which case that did have full invasion striping and since he flew the P-51D version after D-Day it did not have the full invasion striping? Also according to his website the white wall tires were only on his B version. I am only asking as I was about to paint the rest of the invasion stripes on but after researching more it seems that it did not have them?

                                          Hi ADKer21!
Can't say for 100% sure, I could ask Jim to ask his Dad.  I'm just going on the Corgi 1/32 model I have, which does show the invasion stripes.  It would seem that Bud Flew the B model on
D Day, so the D model could have just been one black stripe.  I've seen so many variations on that, I decided that I'd put them on mine, if for no other reason, that they would give the plane greater visibility in the air, which is what the stripes were for, so the ground forces could tell friend from foe.  I'll see what I can find.
Just e mailed Jim to see what he can find for us.
