  • RE: Freewing P-51 w/MrRCSound build

Hey Lon, I did the same thing, but the wires were all good, I thought it might be the y chord so I reverse the two G/L plugs and still one was no go.  So I hooked it up to the servo tester, straight into the gear and it was sporadic, "very strange" thinks I, then the light goes on.  I go into the DX8 go into Servo Setup and into travel/gear and start rotating the gear.  I turned up the left side value to 105% and up/down/up/down!!!! Beautiful!!
My only explanation is that it wasn't getting to its full throw so it wouldn't travel the other way until it did, does that make sense?

    Anyway, it worked!!

FINALLY!!!!!........got to fly "Iron Ass" :D  and I'm extremely happy with her.  Got 2 flight in under dubious wind conditions today but she handled it great.  Flew her with a 4S 4000 Nanotech all the way forward and just needed a coupe of clicks up and a couple of right aileron.  As far a power goes, I was running right around 3/4 throttle most of the time and she's no speed demon for sure but very scale like speeds. No real bad tendencies to snap when slowed, just a mushy little waggle to warn of a stall. The first landing was a bit embarrassing as I was about 6 feet short of the asphalt runway threshold and the loooong grass at the field flipped her over.  No damage other than breaking the little plastic hinge points on the main gear doors. (that's why they're missing in the video below which is the second flight).  I apologize for the extremely crappy video quality as this was just a pocket camera in video mode and once he used the digital zoom it got ugly :-/ .  What you CAN tell from the video is the EXCELLENT sound quality from the MrRCSound system. Nice and LOUD and got lots of compliments from people at the field. Anyway, here it is...and pay no attention to the chubby grey haired pilot (the camera adds 20lbs) .  My buddy has a better video of the first flight and I'll post it later.

            Rc flyer,

Have you done the "Prop Mod" to her? After my first 4-5 flights with IronAss, I did the prop mod. And it makes a very good difference. And then eventually I upgraded the ESC and went to 5s.

Not yet, but might give it a shot after I get more comfortable. Don't like to stress a new battery for the first few cycles but don't think it's gonna be a problem as the battery was just barely warm. What ESC did you upgrade to?

Thanks Flygirl, I was kinda bummed when Isaw how terrible the video was on that second flight :( . Oh well, we'll do better next time as the video wasn't really a high priority this time.

                  Steve,

I upgraded to the ZTW Mantis 85A ESC with 5A SBEC http://www.motionrc.com/ztw-mantis-8...-with-5a-sbec/.
With the ESC upgrade and 5s battery. I fly at 50% throttle which is equal to about 85-90% 4s throttle. When out flying, i'll fly a 5s, then next flight on 4s....unless my club buddies are flying their gasers at the same time, then i'll fly 5s then....can't let those gasers speed by me!
Maybe you've seen some of my video's, if not, here's one of my 5s flights.

Yeah, you gotta stay out in front of those oil spewers  . Thanks for the recommendation, but a 5A BEC sounds a little weak with all the electronics on this bird to me. Can I ask what 5S lipo are you using?

                      Steve,
5s 3300 35c Predator is what I'm running. They're performing and holding up well, so far. I couldn't resist a sale on them $34 ea. I have on my wish list the 5s 4000 60c Admiral Pro. Sure i'll be pulling the trigger on one or two of them soon.
5a BEC weak...well, believe the plane came from the factory with a 5a...we'll see if that ever comes back to haunt me.
Runway is not a long one for sure. No issues for taking off. landing, you have to hit it right on to touchdown and stay on it.  If you come in a little hot, you'll end up in the grass for sure.  It's a great target to try and do so, but great well groomed grass all around it. Take off or landing on the grass with the IronAss is no issue at our field.

Thanks for all the info Lon. Yeah, I know 5A is stock also, but seems like I remember reading somewhere that as your cell count goes up the ability of the BEC to output full amperage rating is diminished. Obviously it's working fine for you so I'm probably being overly cautious. If I get a chance I'll put a meter on it and work all the servos and landing gear to see what it draws.

OK, here's the short maiden flight(much better quality :D ).  Shouldn't have tried to make such a perfect landing near the threshold as I had such a looooong runway, but as Maxwell Smart would say "Missed it by that much" :P .  I was a little mad at myself, as you can probably tell, but all in all it was a good maiden flight and I LOVE THE SOUND

                          Steve,
5s 3300 35c Predator is what I'm running.

FINALLY!!!!!........got to fly "Iron Ass" :D *and I'm extremely happy with her. *Got 2 flight in under dubious wind conditions today but she handled it great. *Flew her with a 4S 4000 Nanotech all the way forward and just needed a coupe of clicks up and a couple of right aileron. *As far a power goes, I was running right around 3/4 throttle most of the time and she's no speed demon for sure but very scale like speeds. No real bad tendencies to snap when slowed, just a mushy little waggle to warn of a stall. The first landing was a bit embarrassing as I was about 6 feet short of the asphalt runway threshold and the loooong grass at the field flipped her over. *No damage other than breaking the little plastic hinge points on the main gear doors. (that's why they're missing in the video below which is the second flight). *I apologize for the extremely crappy video quality as this was just a pocket camera in video mode and once he used the digital zoom it got ugly :-/ . *What you CAN tell from the video is the EXCELLENT sound quality from the MrRCSound system. Nice and LOUD and got lots of compliments from people at the field. Anyway, here it is...and pay no attention to the chubby grey haired pilot (the camera adds 20lbs) . *My buddy has a better video of the first flight and I'll post it later.

                              *
Can't see a link to your video.

The only real helicopter is the CH-47 Chinook. The rest are just sling loads!

                              • Good job, and by the way, I agree about the landing gear doors. I have a collection of them, trying to figure a way to re pin them. The trouble is that you have to buy a complete set of gear doors every time you have to replace one, so I have enough gear door sets to outfit the Eight Air Force!
As for throttle, Captain Mike pointed out to Lon and me that there is no difference between 3/4 throttle and full with the stock system. When he flew My Little Gal II at Nefi, he advised and demonstrated landing with around half throttle, fuse level and controlling the descent with throttle, get the mains down, chop throttle and pin the tail. I spent a few hours on the sim when the weather was bad practicing exactly that and it helped tremendously.
Here's shot of Captain Mike and My Little Gall II and here's one of what a landing should look like. Once you get past the three point mentality, the landings get better!

                                • Just finished putting together the Old Crow and had a question before maiden about the dual rates listed - are they accurate? 4 mm low rate listed for elevator (?) - do you get off the runway with 4mm? Thanks for any help.

                                  • Thanks MRC for the response. For any other owners who's manual says elevator rates are 4mm/8mm, try 12mm low rate to start.

                                    • Here's my theory, High rates at takeoff and mid rates for flight. When going slower, you need more input to get the response.
