Official Freewing 90mm F-4 Phantom II Thread

Today I sprayed 2 final thin coats of regular primer. Tomorrow I'll lightly sand with 600 grit wet/dry paper then add a few 3d pieces and will be ready for paint.

Elbee, can you tell me which is the correct placement of these parts. The one on the right or left. trying to get the wide strip set the correct way. I think it's the one on the left for proper direction. Thanks in advance.

Rex,

The 'open' ends go forward, i.e., in your picture the one on the right is oriented correctly back to front.

However, the angled side goes at the top.

Th whole part is mounted just shy of the molded panel line.

I do not recall which print sheet I used for your parts, but the smoothest side of the part should face outward.

I have attached some pictures for reference.

Thanks, Elbee. I will install these correctly per your instructions. Fuselage is very smooth and after adding some hatches on top of fus. will be ready for paint. Your model is still the goal I'm after.

She was a true labor of love. I'd had that model in my head for many years. It was meant to be for me. Fortunately, Freewing would create a foamie version after I had gotten back into the hobby in 2017. Providence. I had a Jet Hanger Hobbies F-4 with all the options sitting in the corner when Typhoon Ex-Wife hit and all was lost in that storm's wake. LOL

Understand when a Tornado hits, can be very troublesome.
I have the Jet Hanger F-4 and the A-7 Corsair. Both are in primer just work on them a little since bought new in the early 90s. Ordered R/C Geeks Jet Hanger cockpit and full body pilots for both planes when Chris sent the FW F-4 pilots. The JH cockpit has more detail and will look outstanding when I finish it.
My A-7 has the scale leading edge flaps, aileron spoilers, dive brake and all the scale features of the real one. I take many pictures of the A-7 in the Air Force Museum every time I visit, same for Robin Olds F-4C. Hope to meet Chris Wolfe at some meet and let him critic them. These are builders kits and take time to get right. Both will be EDF powered.

What size EDF for the JH Phantom as she's a big girl by Freewing standards as I recall.

Would you still use the 'bifurated pipe' or go for a twin setup?

Life is not a straight line. Your not harping,I understand my friend.
I have a nib Dynamax and nib OS91. Might try and machine an alum motor mount to fit the Dynamax.or go with a JP EDF. Single probably. I do have a new 80 FW EDF from my friends Avanti so could envision 2 of them if enough room is available. If singlr I'll use the OEM exhaust pipe if single, on a twin I'd need advice from some experts. A twin would be nice.
I have machined a scale gear, and it is mounted in the scale position, similar to the RC Crafters scale gear but my costs are cheaper, hobby hour time.

Looking very good Rex. Can't wait to see the finished product.... Have over 100 flights on mine now and my flying friend. Loves his to.. so far this Is way easier to land than my F16. Hope to change that ... Try try..

I think I have added the last 3d parts to the outside of the fuselage. makes the intake dividers more scale. Elbee that center seam is really hard to get seamless. I have sealed and primed, sanded but every time I prime some of it shows thru.
On my jet hanger F-4 the OS 91 would be a good fit but I believe the EDF would be best overall in today's world. Glow plugs are expensive.

100 flights, that's great. I haven't flown mine yet and will have our turbine jet expert do the test flight. I will get a sport edf to fly before I fly this one. Lots of time in doing this so I'll need jet practice.
Guess your going into your winter months soon, are you going to modify anything new? If so, please post your progress.

The foam glue won't sand and is always right on the surface in a sandwich seam.

The only way I know to fix that is to cut a shallow groove from each side of the seam and remove the glue and foam and do the filler/sand until it's gone to your satisfaction.

I did that to a couple parts on my Flightline Corsair turtledeck.

Thanks Elbee. I have almost all the seam covered and what is left shows very little. Those glue joints are really hard to get cleaned up. If I remember right, I cut a small V on my Corsair and filled with filler. Slept a night or two and forgot. LOL

After several lite coats of scale white to cover the gray primer I have the stab/rud and lower fuselage painted. Still wet and drying in pics. Going to let dry out for a few days before I do the top

I was able to spray the lite grey on the top today, looking nice. Couple more colors for the fuselage then will mask the tail for the sunburst. Will use Elbee;s idea to spray first color before the red and hopefully no seepage.
