Great, what size do you recommend for these EDFs?

I still have my V1 power pod from the crashed bird. So, I opened it up to investigate where one could place the RF chokes. Remember, the closer to the ESC, the better.

Plenty of room and 2 placement options….

Note, These are not clipped or zip tied. I was simply experimenting with placement options.

You can bet that my V2 will have these installed. I’ve learn the hard way what happens if you don’t use them.

Then a small one will be placed by the green ferrite ring choke up by the receiver.

Three chokes total. Consider adding them to the SR-71, too. There is lots of room in the SR’s motor nacelles. I did…and I am confident the SR-71 is better (less chance of loss of control) for having done it.

Photos below are from both the topside and bottom side of the power pod. Zoom in and you will see the black chokes around the big main red, big main black and the smaller red/black/white throttle signal wires.

Only one of 2 power module RF chokes is placed and not closed or zip tied…experimenting only.

PS…This A-10 VERY likely crashed because the RF chokes were not used. It experienced a total loss of control one day. I was discussing this crash with a Ham Radio guru…he clued me in on the need for using the chokes.

Not to rehash all the info in other HS forum debates and discussions about RF chokes, I will summarize…..

-Those with radio gear that can monitor TX/RX communications/quality proved RF chokes do good things. RF chokes lessen the percentage of holds and drops.
-Large high current EDFs benefit the most. No need to use them on a P-38, for example.
-It was stated that the high current ESC(s) can generate enough RF noise to disrupt the RX FHSS look-up table pointer. When this happens, loss of control results.
-The UBEC generates RF noise, too. It benefits from an extra choke.
-I lost a few EDF jets before I started using RF chokes. I have not lost a single plane due to loss of control since I began installing RF chokes. THAT’S ALL THE EVIDENCE I NEED…period.

They clip on, but it’s a good idea to put a zip tie around each choke to secure the closure clips. Place them on the wires as close to the ESC(s) as possible and ONLY on the side of the ESC(s) going towards the fuselage where the RX is located. No need to put them on the motor side wires of the ESC(s). You can…won’t hurt, but the motor side wires of the ESC(s) generate less RF noise.

I generally add small RF chokes to LONG control servo wires and out at/near the control servo. For example the rudder and elevator servo wires of a AL-37.

Chokes are light weight. I also add another near the “green” ferrite ring choke that is on the wire running from the UBEC to the RX.

Bottom line….They can’t hurt, and they seem to help. I fly a LOT. So, several thousand care free flights are proof enough for me.

Go to Amazon and search for clip-on RF chokes. Buy a variety pack. The large ones will accommodate all the wires coming out of the ESC in a single choke. The tiny ones can be placed on long-run servo wires. As near to the servo as possible.

One example Amazon offering follows. Also a photo of the chokes installed in an AL-37 belly near the two ESCs as an example placement, so you can see how they fit the ESC wires (motor side wires in this photo…2 more are on the other side of the ESCs….overkill on motor side, as noted above…but can’t hurt.)

PS…On the SR-71, three (3) RF chokes are used. One at each ESC and one near the green ferrite ring choke on the wire coming from the UBEC to the RX.

It looks like outrunner is what is being demonstrated. If you look at the edf spinner out runner is gray in runner is gold.

So many great improvements, great work to all the engineering involved. Regret to pick, but am I seeing negative incidence on the ground? Seems to be a trend with FW, think it's to reduce bouncing on landing, but seems like an odd fix. I'll put 1/4" spacer under my nosegear again, but doubt it'll be neutral. Reason it matters: takeoff "jumps" off as it transitions from negative to positive. Using high gyro helps. What's up, FW?

The elevators have so much authority it won't be noticed. My V1 rotates gracefully at 75% throttle using the 12 blade 2150 fans off grass.

Yes, the video is the 9-blade EDF.

What's great is FW has made available 3 purchase options: one of which is the 9-blade with out-runner motors, the second is an ARF+ (no edfs/motors) and the third is 12-blade in-runner version with a gyro.

Note: It has been reported that the 12-Blade in-runner set up has the gyro as an upgrade option.
