  • Bringing this thread back to life to ask for some assistance...................

I recently purchased this Freewing 90mm Yak 130 ARF+. I installed the 8s Freewing 12-bl. fan with 4075 1390Kv Inrunner Motor, coupled with the FMS 120A HV ESC (which I already had). I've flown this plane several times now and it has become my favorite jet. Till now, the Freewing L-39 was my fave. It's got enough grunt to make this plane what it should have been all along. The old 6s Yak 90mm that my friend had years ago was a real pig - underpowered, overweight, too draggy. The 8s system more than compensates for the weight and dragginess. It blasts down the runway with authority and lifts off without touching the sticks after a fairly short roll. And those landing lights ......................... man, are they BRIGHT! Everyone commented on them. With a HobbyEagle A3-L and Assan steering gyro, this thing tracks like an arrow and is so locked in. Landing with full flaps has been picture perfect each and every time. It'll do a large loop from level flight without a problem, unlike the old 6s, that needed a good diving start for a loop and even then, it was likely to fall out before getting to the top.

Now to my actual topic ................................... Because it's an ARF, the top airbrake is sealed and I have no idea how to make it operational. I don't want to slice it open and pry it up in case that's the wrong approach. There seems to be a hatch just forward of the top light that has a seam around it. I could open that up to see what's in there that might give me a clue as to how the thing works. The airbrake probably doesn't do much, but like my SU-30, it looks real cool and I'd like to make it work. Does anyone have this Yak with a working airbrake? Can you tell me what the mechanism (servo/actuator/rod) looks like? A picture of the airbrake open and looking into the cavity would be helpful. Thanks.

Hey Daryl, let me know when you go and I'll bring it. With 50 planes, I try to cycle through them 3 to 4 planes each time I go. I do have my favorites that fly more often. I usually only fly in the mornings on week days and the occasional weekend morning.
I'm not sure the big Yak has been discontinued. The 6s PNP is in stock. The rest are all "out of stock", perhaps waiting for the big price increase when they are re-released. I got the last ARF+ from RC Castle.

        • I did see the 90mm Yak in stock at RC castle a month ago. It was out of stock after a day or two while I contemplated buying it.

            • Only the 6s PNP is available at RC Castle and it may just simply be remaining old stock. All other forms of the 90mm Yak-130 is "out of stock" in both places. I'm sure you can put the 6s system into some other 90mm plane. I did it for my 90mm Venom. Turned it into a real mover and shaker.

PS. I've given up on making the airbrake functional. I pried off that little hatch just in front of the top light and there's nothing under there. I'd have to buy the entire airbrake actuator mechanism and install a servo. Also, the airbrake itself is sealed (glued?) so tight, I can't budge it.

Next Saturday is the fun fly. If weather is nice, I may bring the Yak. I don't usually fly at those events. Too many people and too many rules.

                        • I have the clear cockpit piece for this airplane. It is tinted. I will ship it to anyone who needs it in the US for $25. Let me know if you want them. Thanks.

                          • I'm stuck! Please help, hopefully someone is looking in
ive aquired the 90mm yak, prev owner bought it second hand yrs ago, nobody knows if its 8s or 6s. Ive got the motor out, no markings, ive got the esc out, its enclosed in a blue anodised case, no markings. I think this is quite okd, it would be a shame to toast a 6s set up using 8s, or underpowered a 8 s set up using 6s! It has an airframe, can anyone say what I have!
                            thanks

                            • The 8s was an after sale upgrade and had a red or blue shroud. What color is your shroud?

                              • The fan has a red metal surround, with a red metal bracket to keep in place, and the motor shroud is the same colour, red, like an anodised finish. The esc has a plastic blue top to the case, and blue metal case . I'm surprised neither esc or motor have nothing in the way of manufacturer markings, or any space written on them. Seller thought it was 6s, but doesn't actually know, thanks

                                • Just before it was discontinued ("out of stock" for years), a PNP 8s was available. However, even the 8s is very old, the 6s also very old and could be the same age if purchased near the end of that production run. Since you have the fan out, can you remove the motor and see if there are any markings on it? The 6s is about 1835kv, while the 8s is about 1390kv.
As Evan said, I elected to upgrade mine to 8s after purchase for the extra power and reverse (it rolls forever on a smooth runway). The 6s barely got off a grass runway, which was all I had back then. Flew mine last week and 8s is the way to go with this big, heavy plane.

                                  • You have a 8s. There are some tiny set screws to pull the bullet cover off the back and you can see the motor markings. That is a really good fan.

                                    • here are a couple of pics, they might help if anybody can ID them
so just to be sure, they made this model as a 6s set up. After that, there was a 8s upgrade, so not the complete model, just upgrade esc and motor? That's a bit of a rip off! they sell it underpowered,. but then give you the option of having what it should have had at the start?
Was there a version where you fitted your own esc and fan/motor? I just cant see any freewing components not having any sort of markings on the parts, I'm nervous that I use 8s, which is what I want, and fry the esc and motor, if it happens in flight, that's the end of a rare airframe

                                      • A rip off. When the plane came out what was in it was the best they had. Then they developed the 8S fan and people could put it in if they wanted more power. Just like if you buy a current plane there are more powerful fans you can buy to put in that plane.

Can I suggest you see how much power it has on a 6s battery? If it makes about half the thrust the plane weighs it should tell you. But I can’t tell you about your ESC but would assume if it has a 8s fan the ESC would be 8s too.

                                        • appreciate your help Evan, good call, Ill put it back together (if I can decipher the rats nest of wiring!) and see if I can get some sort of thrust test, It would be nice to know what I'm dealing with, Its a great looking model, If all goes well, I will have to give it a repaint!.
