    Friends,

    Not a warbird but a scale relaxing putt-around for these hot lazy days of June. FMS 1400mm J-3 Cub, 55" wingspan and comes with floats.3 club members live on a lake nearby, so we plan to try our hand at water flying. Will be a first for me and they have boats to rescue any mishaps. A quality plane and has a lot of scale features. Slow posts lately so I'm just jawing with all of you. I have the summer blues on building.

    Dave,

    Download the STL files to "Slice" and go from there.

    Could be resized, modded, or redesigned to fit most any radial engine cowling.

    Thanks, Steve. I'll give it a go! BTW, although the wind came up this morning to nix continuing my cuff tests on the CE prop mods, I have much more confidence now that they will work. I think your sending a V2 file with thickened cuffs and then my getting more liberal with the glue and sealing the ends of the cuffs with CA, has made them virtually like a part of the prop itself. I may have to wait for Sunday or Monday to really wring them out with more test flights, but I think they have a good chance of staying on the airplane at this point. And with all the tests I did for about a year with my own design, I know that they don't negatively impact the airplane's flight characterisitcs, even if one or more pop off in flight. But I think these will stay on the airplane, hopefully. Will report back results next time I fly.

    Yes, Craig. It got the engine turning over enough to where you could add the fuel and ignition and get the engine started. Pretty common practice, especially on the remote islands where they operated.

    I don't know if you have seen the 1965 version of Flight of the Phoenix with Jimmy Stewart or not, but here is a clip of them using the cartridge to try and get the engine started on their rebuilt airplane in the desert. Great action clip!

    Ye Dave that was it. Sorta like a shot gun blast.. I think their was a place on the side of the cowl general area. To place maybe 4 or 6 cartridges..

    Those look good, Hugh. I have thought about doing cowl flaps for my Corsair. Would look better wtih them than the OEM look. I have done functional cowl flaps on two of my larger scale P-47 gassers back in the day that were on the contest circuit. They were very popular and it was nice having control of them with a servo to put them where I wanted during flight or ground operations.I haven't closed the door on that for the Corsair, but might try them on a different fuselage to test it out. Not sure if I'll get around to doing that at this stage of the game, though...

    Hi Craig: If you're talking about using a special cartridge to fire to get the prop turning to start, absolutely they did! I know some earlier models of the Spitfire had them, and the Corsair did, especially in the far-flung reaches of the South Pacific islands. I had a good friend who has since passed, but his dad was a marine Corsiar mechanic in the Solomon Islands during WWII. According to him, they used the cartridge strarts on their land-based Corsairs on a regular basis. Hope that helps if I understood your question.

    What that might refer is 'cartridge' charges used to turn over radial engines.

    Outstanding looking Corsairs, exceptional work guys. The only thing it needs now is the Elbee operating engine cowls. You both have the expertise to do the operating cowls, but if you want to take a quick and cheap shortcut, you can do something like I did (the cheap shortcut King ). Used some .060 polystyrene sheets and made my own engine cowls and inlaid it into the foam. After I finished, my only regret was that I didn't make them big/long enough, but for now, it was sufficient.

    Flew my Parkzone Corsair w/e-flite retracts. After a few years of not flying it, it still is a beautiful flying bird. When lowering flaps for landing the left flap foam hinge gave way and snap rolled left into mother earth. It was slow enough not much damage but reminded me that the FL Corsair has plastic hinges and don't think they would fail. Just sayin.

    It serves you correctly, I just cropped it a bit to try and match it. Reminds me of how much work went into it, just as all the guys did with theirs as well. Funny how this airplane inspires this modder madness!
