Well its a scale and I told you that. Don't get shelf queen on me now after all the time making sure its appearance was perfect. Run that damn boat!

I knew thats what would happen. You dont want to really run it now....

welcome to scales hydros.....we have a new member that doesn't want his boat smashed....

    • If the boat runs loose its up to you to tune it and correct its flightiness. This is why I like the modern hydros. Hulls that have a front ram wing and canard. For my fin lay version of the PAK I incorporated the front ram wing and put the flap on a servo. My '91 Circus Circus is the same way.

to race it you have to hope you and the other drive well. Some people wont race theirs depending on what drivers are in the heat....Scale skippers are special.....and snobbish who they will run their boats with in a heat race...

          • I wouldn’t race this “shelf queen”. Too much invested and I would be absolutely heartbroken if something bad happened. Like I tell people, it’s not like I can just go buy a 1982 1:8 scale Pay N Pak RTR FE on Amazon.

If I do get the bug, I’ll likely race something much less expensive that won’t break my heart if it crashes.

This is why scratch building from scraps of wood and rattle can paint jobs make sense to some of us. Looks like trash to some people but watch how it finishes when I'm done with her. The boat is mostly made from Luan that was a pallet liner at Lowes hardware. They throw it away. My idea is to build a raceable scale for under $500.00. Thats not that easy. Ive also been looking for 6 s setups that will work.in hulls made from balsa and epoxy glass. I have full carbon fiber hulls but this is how you can get more people on the water. Make it affordable and disposable so to speak. You probably think I'm lying but you can take something like this where u only have a few 100 dollars in and have it look and run as nice as anything you might purchase off a shelf. I plan to piggy back of this build and show you exactly what I'm speaking of by finishing here on the squawk, One thing about this frankenhull ....she is light... and will be even lighter . Im going to skeletonize all the bulkheads. You can laminate in CF if you want to. It isn't against the law or anything like that..🤔

              Thanks

                • 7 cell finlay scratcbuild. They can run when they are tuned and trimmed correctly. Ill send you some scratch build plans for a few 1/8th scales. These are old videos. Imagine with more modern power and props available now.

I wish I could afford to have a beautiful home in the state of Washington on a lake. No there quite yet. But I'm working on it. You can scratch build another Pak from Finlay plans and race it. Also ask Brian does he have some Dave Frank 1/8th Plans.. I don't have to live there to facilitate scratch building the boat for you. If you do just promise to race it if you go out with the boys. Maybe someone else might want one then. I have a guy here in NC that can laser cut the kits also. He's not charging a lot of money. The point is a raceable economic scale not a concours contestant. But hey maybe you should think about entering your scale in such and event before you put a single blemish on her.

                        • I added two autobailers to the back of my boat tonight. I get you only need one but hey if redundancy works in aviation why not hydros?

I am looking forward to seeing how effective they are. I mean, these are cheap plastic 5 dollar parts but the engineering seems sound. I hope to get her back on the water soon.

                          • Aros those are only 'cheap' as someone has made and sold a gizillion of them.

"Confidence is high' you'll be dry.

You'll be fine, riding on that chine.

They'll say, "Yep", she's on the step.

In the pits they'll yak about your Pay-n-Pak.

                              • Hi,
While you were out running the boat did you get a chance to data log anything. Do you know how many amps you drew with each prop you ran. Battery consumption , temps, etc. That is available in your esc. Also have you stated to set up your telemetry?

Id like to see you do that that would allow you to start to tune the boat even better. One prop may get on step and stay on it better than the other. Things like that. A Futaba GPS module will tell you your speed right on the transmitter.

At home on the bench go through the procedure to download the logged data to your pc and have a look at what she did. If you dont have the usb dongle castle will send you one for free. You have to send in the redemption code. You can also buy one . Its like 20 dollars. You need to get that brother.

Thanks for your time and patience

                                  • No I haven't done any data logging. I honestly plan to run her a handful more times and then I am going to retire her as a hangar queen. Get some video, enjoy the thrill of full throttle, and pray she stays upright and in one piece and I'm good.

                                    • I recently purchased an insta360 X3 camera for some cool video for my next time(s) out on the water. Here's a couple quick videos of some angles I am trying out. You can pan the camera anywhere you want post recording during the edit phase which is so cool!

Mounting will be a bit problematic as it is rectangular shaped (about 1.5" wide by 5" tall) but it can be done with a ton of Gorilla Tape, lol.

                                      • Aros, great quality image. Gorilla tape?!?, lots of Gorilla Tape. Also, tie a string to both the boat and the camera and then add more Gorilla Tape. Best, LB

                                        • I went for her second voyage last Saturday. Weather was stunning, the lake was basically glass. Couldn't ask for better conditions. I have an 8S series setup. Ran the first time with it perfectly fine. Plugged the first EC8 connector into the adapter, and when I went to plug the second battery's EC8 connector in, loud POP, flash, started to instantly burn, electrical smell, some smoke. I unplugged it as fast as I could. Slight damage to the finish (grrrrrr!!!!) from dripping aluminum or whatever the connectors are made of. Dinged my finger a bit trying to unplug as fast as I could. Blood on the hull...What a mess.

I just don't get it? On my first run, she got really waterlogged. I wonder if the ESC was compromised at all?

I'm going to bring it to my buddy who knows his stuff about electronics. Hopefully he can get it all figured out as I am not a big fan of having a $3,000 book end collecting dust.
