During the Battle of Iwo Jima, on 21 Feb 1945, a version of foil chaff was used to allow Kamikaze attacks on the USS Saratoga. The Saratoga had F6F Hellcat fighters at the time, Zero fighters were used in the attack. My guess is one of those two fighters.

If you just use "Iwo" in the poem to refer to Iwo Jima then the possibilities for planes used in that W.W.II campaign are wide. For W.W.II these could be Hellcats, Helldivers, B-24's, PB4Y to P-38, P-51's and B-29's on the US side to A6M "Zekes", B6N :Jill", D3A "Vals",D4Y Judy" G4M "Bettys" among others. The US didn't return Iwo Jima to Japan until 1968 and still maintains a Naval base there so the post war possibilities are also numerous.

But, with Alpha's twisted logic on these things I'm sticking with a Mosquito! Yeah!

Beeg, you left out the Grumman Avenger from your list! Also any escort carriers in the TF would have had FM-2 Wildcats.

It's hard to say. The specific reference to Iwo and the line about buzzards (wasn't that a phrase used by the USN to launch fighters?) has me thinking Hellcat, Corsair or (stretching here) Wildcat. It's almost certainly a Pacific bird. Other bits do a wonderful job of confusing the issue though. Lots of bombers in Europe dropped "window". "Red cold" seems like a reference to the Cold War or possibly the eastern front. And "Fast fairies" could even refer to a number of British designs (Fairey Firefly, Swordfish, Battle, etc.).

I rarely buy foam planes anymore, but it it's a large Wildcat (unlikely), I will be making an exception. But my money is on a Hellcat.

A super saber or a f102 or 106 would tickle me.

i would lean toward a Hellcat or a Corsair though as a best guess. Wildcat as an outside chance.

This was after four Wildcats helped repell the 1st invasion attempt at Wake.

The Wildcat also first went into service with the Royal Navy as a replacement for the Fairey Fulmar.

Just my 2 cents worth at trying to decode Alpha-isms. Sounds like maybe Pacific carrier aviation may finally be getting some love other than Corsairs?

Hi Alpha,

I think a Lancaster is in order as there are currently very few models available. The issue with Lancs is that people try to fly them as 3d airplanes and crash...

Also, a PT-17 Stearman in large scale that fits a radial engine would be great!
