I think I'll take another stab at Chris Wolfe's plan to use braided fishing wire on his main gear doors that then attach to the main gear struts. I had some success, but not enough to satisfy me so I removed them temporarily. If this doesn't work this time, I might try to add some dedicated servos to do the job for the gear.

I ordered a 1/10 scale USAF pilot bust from Chris Wolfe that should be arriving in the mail tomorrow. That will be my weekend project extracting the "Chinese" pilot and installing him in his place (after I paint him, of course!)

Hi All: I was able to order the 1/10 scale "Sabre Jock" bust from Chris Wolfe and it arrived yesterday in the mail. I had already cut a hole out of the bottom of the cockpit to extract the stock pilot and smoothed up the hole so it would be ready to accept the Chirs Wolfe pilot when I got it painted. My wife did her part and painted the pilot for me.

Was fairly straight forward getting the pilot into the cockpit. I pretty much copied the idea from CW and how he did his: 1) use a soldering iron to cut out the hole and extract the OEM pilot, 2) glued the CW pilot onto a small piece of basswood painted gray to match the existing floor in the cockpit, 3) glued the pilot and basswood floor onto the cockpit from underneath using RC Canopy glue (in case I have remove it someday). I think it looks much better than the OEM pilot.

We're having some stormy weather the next couple of dasy, so it might be later in the week until I can fly the new updated model. I'm still working on Chris' method of using braided string to pull the main gear doors open and closed when tied onto the struts. I have tried three times, and I still can't get it to work right. I might give it another go, or I'm also looking at some servos, or a servo to get this door sequencing coorect.

I'll attach a couple of pics I just took in the shop.

    Cheers

      • Hi all,

I got my freewing 80mm sabre late last year and kept it for this summer. On only my second time out with it i had a
bird strike on take off that caused the model to slam into a barb wire fence on full power. Needless to say the main wings and fuselage are shredded as a result. I’ve just seen on the motion rc website that the 80mm is discontinued. So they don’t have any replacement parts. (Also checked
        with support).
it’s painful that after only 2 trips to my airfield and a handful of flights it looks like that’s the end of the road with this plane.

can anyone help at all with where I may be able to pick up wings, fuselage and decals from somewhere not yet out of stock?

I’d hate to have to salvage a few parts for spares after such a short time and have to bin the rest!

thank you for any help you might be able to give pointing me in the right direction!

        Chris

        • Try RCCastle, AliExpress, Banggood. They have been known to sell parts for discontinued models.

          • Also put a want ad on RCG. I was really surprised Freewing discontinued this plane.

YEah to say I was surprised would be an understatement. I think it's pretty poor customer service. I've seen a good few models over the years discontinued as PNP/ARF etc, but the parts remained available for a reasonable amount of time thereafter. But this seems to have just pulled the rug out from under this model with no warning. so given the limited usage over gotten this looks like it'll be stripped of parts and binned sadly

Thank you for this... I'll hit them up and see if I can find a few last parts to see if I can keep this bird in the air just long enough that it doesn't feel like a mistake to have bought in the first place!

                        • I’ve just started back into the hobby after a long layoff. After Captain Jolley rotated back to the States this F-86 became my Father's. He renamed it the Patricia II. I’m going to change a few of the decals to make it the Patricia II !
