Wow don't small changes make a huge difference.. looking awesome so far dangerous.
The fabulous f4u. Lives again and again I do like the colours of the birdcage .. and the weathering. Really pops
Great job Dan! Your going to have a beautiful replica when finished.
Best Regards, Rex
Thanks Rex, I just keep plugging away. So many things I'd like to have on her, like the scissor legs that fit over the retracts, the wheel brakes and on and on and on. Do these projects really ever end??
Now, I just need those decals from Callie Check, working on that
Cockpit sides and back...
Got to check with my friend Elbee to see what it was he used on his.
Elbee??
Yes, I am thinking the same thing. Once he was in the cockpit, I realized his clothes were a little too green, which may have been the case when they were new, so a wash of light red/ white will cure that. Greens complimentary color being red, it will turn, for lack of a better phrase, mud. I did the same on my P40 when I mixed the correct green for the green areas, then added red to get the tone and whit to get the hue (shade). I'll see what I can do, stay tuned!
I pried the canopy off and lo and behold, the instrument panel that DaveGee printed is a perfect fit
She measures out at 90mm so the cockpit width I would guesstimate at 91mm as it will almost stay in place with the existing resistance.
Good news so far!
After hours of fighting with my cellphone to be able to transfer pics, I finally succeeded
The pilot got some final touchups and look pretty passable for a Porcelain Pete!!
I used an eye dropper type thing to add some clear gloss to the goggle lenses and a very small brush to add some gloss to the eyes and the lower lip, about as good as I'm going to get him.
I put some more chalk and painted some 'wear and tear' on the left (port) wing from the 'fold line outward.
Being the 'artsy fartzy' guy that I am, I added some purple, medium brown and a coral pink color as well as the standard black and white. To me, it really adds something that you might not immediately detect with your eye. Back when I was doing portraiture I referred to purple as the color of life because it would make a painting really come to life.
Afterwards I sprayed it with workable fixative. I prefer the Crystal Kote fixative by Helmar because its artist grade and made to lock in things like chalk, not knocking the others like Krylon, but I've had great success with this product. Keep the can at least a foot to a foot and a half away from the airplane and let the product settle on it, rather than close up where the air velocity is going to blow your work away. short bursts are the key, half a second short. It's not hair spray (which is a good fixative in itself) The long process has begun....
Since I have a collection of 'Porcelain Petes', I thought I'd try repainting one in Marine khaki colors, first pass complete.
I also dirtied up the vest as the yellow hurts my eyes .
Got some shading on the face, I'll try some washes over the flesh color to make him look a little sun tanned as I'm sure the only thing that was white on these guys was under their skivvies.

Has anyone notices that in virtually all the birdcage Corsair pictures, there's only one antennae mast? After staring at many many pics, the old brain realized this fact.
I'll pull the canopy this weekend and get some measurements, What I'd like to end up with is the armor plate panel aft of the pilots seat, the seat itself, the two side panels and work from there. I'll get the sizes off to Elbee and see what he thinks.
Has anyone ever checked these out, they say they're scalable and just look at the detail!
