Hey Danger Dan:

I like your weathering patterns on the fuse! I find with these models, once you have them for awhile, they start taking on a weathered patina of their own. Like fine wine, they get better over time, unless you crash them, of course!

I have your cockpit parts printed and in a bag so if we can get together sometime, I'll give them to you.

Fantastic work Dan! Wheels look great, hope you install Elbee"s strut covers and modified tail wheel retract, they really add character. I will use Elbee's bomb drop attachment and bomb on mine for some strafing flights. Not used on my version of Ken Walsh but will look cool flying.

I wasn't happy with the placement of the upper color on the cowling, it should have extended down further to the cowling 'joiner' which in itself is in the wrong place, too high, it should line up with the rivet line just above the wing


So I mixed up some paint and lowered the paint line to the joiner, compromised I guess.

I'm also attempting to duplicate the exhaust 'swirl' coming out of the cowling and doing a 90 degree turn downwards just before the leading edge. Meanwhile she's getting more combat dirty with the wheel hubs painted and the staining on the fuse. Can't go much further until the decals arrive, they're on their way though.

Good info. Probably fly with stock prop to get everything dialed in, then go to the bigger prop. Would like a Curtiss prop so will look around for something similar. Yes, a basic OD but will need advice on shading the faded surfaces which in pictures occurred. Another good profile would be Silver Lady (did this scheme om my Yellow P-47) but leaning more to Lucky. Plan to pick your Brain on this.

Corsair is really coming alive. The Birdcage had a hard life in the SWP and the worst wreathing you apply only looks better if done in a subtle way. A 1600m B-26 dirtied up would be another one to attack Rabaul
Look at my Corsair cockpit posts and you will see I used Elbee's seat and cockpit parts. Required some foam surgery, not much, but really adds to the plane
I might start a re-paint/ weathering post when I start? Excitement is hitting my bones again to start this, but Keeper of the wallet says I have to wait till X-MAS to open. Think she might be the Grinch!

Ah Muncie, I'm just 1 1/2 hr drive from me and attend many scale events throughout the summer, Finishing a BUSA 1/4 sc N-17 for next year. Fantastic facility and wide-open flying space.
Ordered the V 3 scale prop with purchase and have Robart wheels. Trying to decide on what profile to model, thinking of R Johnsons 'LUCKY'

Johnson's plane Lucky would be a good one. Pretty basic paint scheme for that earlier period of the war. The one distinguishing thing if you want to go full scale, is that it had a Curtiss Electric Prop with the cuffs, and a longer more bullet shaped spinner. I have a couple of planes I have done in this manner, worked out ok after a lot of trial and error. The printed bullet shaped dome I had someone design and make for me with the threads inside so it can screw onto the prop shaft. I still don't know how to do that, but I can easily print some up if I have the STL file for them. With the Corsair V3 prop, all the security for keeping the prop from flying off the aircraft is borne by a hex nut that securely holds the prop on, no matter what kind of spinner you put on the end.

If you decide you like a plane that had the Hamilton Standard prop with the more blunt spinner on it, you don't have to do anything, that's how easy it is. If the accuracy of a Curtiss Electric propeller isn't a big deal for you, you can just put a Ham Stan prop and spinner on your airplane. Most would never know the difference.

Sounds good! It's one I've eyeballed as well. I've had Bob Johnsons book since I was a kid, don't know how many times I've read it, it's definitely a bird/pilot worth honoring.
Good news, the gear folded perfectly, it was just a matter of placing the wheel on the axle so it would hit the gear well dead center. Started an initial coat of very diluted umber and one side of the fuse. Painted the lines and then used a paper towel on my finger to pull the paint down. Looks great for the first layer.


The umber shows its green against the blue of the fuse which is just way to cool!



The darker spots under the cockpit for instance, were with a less diluted mix, which, I admit was a complete fluke, the paint started settling on the bottom of the container and I reliaded the brush from the bottom, good fluke though, sometimes those accidents turn out to be the coolest thing.

Ah he loves it! You'll love the P 47 too, I've known many people including OV 10, Ryan Ramsay and DaveGee that rave about them. If you dig through the archives, Ov10 (Warbird Charlie) replaced the 6s system with a 4s system and a bigger prop and, believe it or not, a sizable performance boost as well. I saw him fly it at Muncie a few years back and it was impressive. It was also the survivor of the great 'Collision' when Ryan and Charlie tried to make one bird out of two!
Ryan lost and the motor and ESC from the wreck now reside in my FMS P 40.
I believe Dave is running the FMS 1700 mm Corsair prop on his P47's and it looks much more scale, but let him tell you
I'll check with him about the pieces, we're going to, hopefully, get together this week.

I made some bushings for Davegee,Elbee and myself from brass rod, 1/4” turned down and bored to fit the Robart wheels and stock axle. I think Elbee did a complete new wheel for his though. If you need a pair of bushings PM me your address and I will send you a pair. Mine spin freely on the axles and no wobble

So, I think mine just missed the mark, there were only four left when I ordered mine, then they were out of stock for a couple of days, oh well.
So the Robarts arrived today and I tinkered around with them to get them to fit. I ended up using a prop/shaft adapter from the Pandoras and a lock collar in this order. Spacer, electricians tape to upsize the diameter of the axle pin, wheel fitted over the taped area, lock collar, then through the hole in the strut. Originally, I had the stock spacer after the wheel and before the collar but it looked like the wheel was too far from the strut so I removed it.



I successfully retracted the gear with the spacer still installed, but haven't tried it without, that'll wait 'til tomorrow. I like the looks of these tires better than the stock ones, just too bad the supplied axle adapters don't work.

Aros, Great news. Love my Birdcage and hope to get the bubble-top next spring. Sounds like you are involved with FL, if so hopefully we will see some new 1600 Warbirds next year. A 1600 SBD-3 Dauntless would be a great model.

I did the same thing and redid all the areas that had faded out, by adding some additional pastels after the fixative; worked great, too.
