  • Speaking of Corsairs, got the antennae wiring done. Found a small clear plug that fit onto the side of the fuse and a couple of springs and there it is. I used 10 lb test fishing line for the wire itself, looks good!!
So, now she's ready for the air (after I range check the poop out of it).
The trouble with investing so much time in these aircraft is that maiden flight gets scarier and scarier!! Sometimes I wonder if it's not better to slap it together and fly it. It's like sticking your toe in the water versus diving right in.
One thing, she'll look so awesome in the air!!

    • Maiden in the books!!

Did as I said, ranged checked the poop out of her and tried a flight, not bad, a bit rough on the landing. My gut is to go with the same D/R and Expo that I have on the Spitfires. The antennae mast on the tail came unglued and , in an old guy moment, I misplaced it. I spent more time searching for the darned thing than flying!!
I finally gave up and came home. Lo and behold, it was inside the airplane. I remember thinking about guys storing the masts and things inside the plane so, I dropped it in there. So now it's glued back in place using E6000 so it never comes off again!

      Somewhere in the Solomons!!

I also had the old Bearcat out, I love that plane, a survivor of a crash on Muncie back in 2017, she's back in the air and a great og to plane. Proof, I had a good flight and landed her no problem, taxied her in to find that the portside aileron came unglue and was just hanging there. THAT'S a lovable bird!

        Hey Dan,

I poked the antenna horizontally into the inside of the battery cover.

Wiggled it around to enlarge the hole.

Wicked a little CA (foam safe) in the hole.

I store the mast there when transporting and I always know where it is (In Theory).

        Works for me.

Congrats on your successful 1st check flight.

Great completion to an outstanding project, Sir.

        Best, LB

        • Congrats on first flight! Shakey hands and knocking knees after usually requires sitting down, wiping sweat from my eyes and a cold drink. Your plane is beautiful, Dan. You need to bring to Muncie, and we could fly in formation.

          • Just installed the new 6.5 mm pins in my retracts. It does require some reaming of the trunnion, but it saves money to not replace the trunnion. Please be aware that the trunnions are stamped "L" & "R", but actually belong in the opposite side of the plane from how they're marked.

            • Good to know. I e mailed SmallpartsCNC.com to see what a set of aluminum retract sides would cost. They don't have them on their website, but they do custom work and I mentioned that there would probably be a bunch of us interested in purchasing them. If you have never tried aluminum retract sides, I bought a few sets years ago for my FMS 1400mm P51's and they are awesome! BBD has had hers for probably 9 years and I've never lost a retract. Bent the pin a couple of times but nothing that a vice won't fix.

This would seem to be a great solution to the retract cracking. I'll keep you all informed if I get a response.
Meanwhile, I see that RC Geek is the (for all intents and purposes) the new Alpha (as in Enos). I asked him what's coming down the tubes in regards to 1600mm Warbirds, as in WWII fighters. All he would say is that one is coming, no more info than that.
              Let the speculation begin!!

              • Dan,
A new FL 1600 Warbird would be great. I'm plane poor at the moment but an SBD-3 Dauntless would be nice. You could paint a pilot and gunner, and a scale cockpit detailed out would keep some of us busy next winter. Just assembled the FL Phantom and finished a small 3d plane I bought at Toledo. Now back to finishing the P-47. Tell Dave I will contact the HS class next week.
                Best Regards, Rex

                    • Just a guess, but I'd say that we probably won't see any new stock until the tariff issue is solved, then, hopefully, we'll see the Golden Age of RC begin with reduced prices and plenty of selection!!

                      • Dan,
I agree with you. Going to be a roller coaster ride for a while. I stocked up on everything I thought I'd need and purchased the F-4 Phantom before prices went up or out of stock. Planting a larger garden this year, wife cans food so models and food are taken care of.

                          • Hi. I have a new Corsair and while assembling the model I discovered that the elevator has a lot of play in the hinges on one side. The play in the hinge makes a big deflection at the end of the wing, about 3-4mm. Does anyone know what the hinges look like inside, their shape and principle? I don't want to use a lot of force to take it apart and see what it looks like inside.

Hi. I solved it by buying a replacement elevator because of the shipping cost. I will fix the original one later when I know what it looks like inside the hinge. I have flown it three times, it flies great and lands as easily as a Jumbo Jet.

                                      Better than the stock one!
I bought the STL file for the R2800 but it was too large to fit straight in.
The original has the bellhousing and the rear cylinders all in one piece, I ended up modifying that by slicing off the rear cylinders and shrinking the remaining part to the correct diameter, then altering the height to fit. This meant recreating the circular base that the mags sit on, which wasn't hard and then trimming the nose of the bellhousing for the angle(s) of the motor. Once that was done, I handed it over to Dave to work his magic on the printer and he came up with a great set of parts. The rear cylinders ended up being a picture blown up to size. On mine, I resized the rear cylinder part using Tinker Cad and printed a picture of that in black and white on photo paper, came out great! I did try 'squashing' the part in Tinker Cad so that it was 1/8" thick, but there just wasn't enough room without hacking foam, wasn't worth it.
Have to get mine out in the sun next weekend, it's supposed to be in the 80's, right now we're clouded over and had a bit of snow. Wyoming has five seasons, this being 'Sprinter'
where we can go from the 70's to snow in a day, sucks, but it's worth it to live here!
Anyway, got our creative juices flowing!!
