I put a "booster tab" and trim tab on my old H9 bird. Just bits of styrene and the fairings are shaped from several layers of aluminum duct tape.

Hey Aros, I had another scale idea that's been brewing. You know where the oil coolers are at the wing root on either side of the fuselage right next to the intake veins for the superchargers? The inside diameter of that inset on the wing root is just about one inch across. In the plumbing section of almost any hardware store or Home Depot you will find an assortment of the replacement aerator screens that screw on to the outlet of your bathroom or kitchen sink faucet. See where I'm going with this?:Ligthbulb: Those aerator screens are just about an inch in diameter so they could be slightly modified to fit in and closely resemble that oil cooler screen. I originally thought about this for the supercharger inlets for the P-38 but I filed the idea away for later. Anyway, just another idea to explore......that's half the fun, right? Brad

I did this very thing with my LX Corsair...Not very scale but certainly looked cool!

Came across this guy who has a ton of awesome videos of his giant scale warbird builds and detailing. Here's a video on functional cowl flaps...Yeeeehaaaw! ;)

Great video, the overlapping tabs between the cowl flap segments are key. That would be a good solution to that big motor tube standoff sticking through the middle of the firewall vs my initial suggestion with the servo in the middle. Looks similar to rifleman-btx's idea. I can visualize it working right now .....outstanding!!! It would take allot of fussing around ..........maybe even a mockup but definitely worth the effort IMHO.........Brad I have another corsair cowl laying around that's a little smaller from another project that you could take with you to practice on.

That's awesome Brad thank you! Yeah I am quite sure I couldn't pull that mod off by myself but with my buddy's help perhaps there's a shot! Helps to have an aeronautical engineer who is also in the hobby as a friend especially for me! LOL

Been burning through a lot of Don's videos (he has hundreds!) and that kind of scale detailing is off the charts. Just amazing what some people can do with their fabrication/tooling/mechanical skill. It's also quite evident that there is no end to scale detail. The more you do, the more you find you can do. It's intimidating to say the least!

I just read through his discussion on his Youtube channel and found that he had passed away. The man was a true master of the trade. Love his video's. It also sounds like he never got to finish it.

This was on his discussion link in his channel...From a comment he made 5 months ago it sounds like he was dealing with a health issue he was hoping to get over. Sad.

Hello Everyone, I am Don's mom. I am so sorry to report that Don passed away Dec. 30th. For those of you who are local, there will be a Celebration of Life for him on Sat. Feb.11th at 4:00pm in the San Diego Aerospace Museum Annex hangar at Gillespie Field. The address is 335 Kenney St., El Cajon, CA 92020. Don would love that his memorial was being held in a hangar!
