  • Finally repaired my F-18! :DDD

About three years ago, I badly crashed my Freewing 6S F-18 Hornet scale fighter jet. Last thursday, the EF-18A took off to the skies once more!

The main reason it took me so long to get her back from the ashes is because I wasn't satisfied with the performance of the glues I had tested out on EPO so far. Consider that I had put 2 weeks worth of work in the paint job, so I didn't want to rush the repairs until I felt confident enough that the results would be good. When I repaired my split-in-two Eurofighter from a different crash earlier this year, I learnt that foam safe cyano actually works wonders on EPO, and it helps fix parts very fast when using an activator spray, so that gave me the confidence to get the work started... but then I was out of cyano for a while, because I didn't want to pay for the shipping costs to order just a few glue bottles from Motion... so I waited until I had to buy something more from them to make out the threshold for free shipping!

That happened just this month, so I finally got my cyanoacrylate glue and quickly got the repair job started. It still took me 4 full evenings to pull the whole jet back together. The nose was bent from compressed foam and I also had to use a heat gun on strategic pinpoint locations to get the model straightened out. The nose gear was ripped off and its pin shorn off. One of the main retracts was totally destroyed from the impact, one taileron had the ball link broken and the other had detached entirely from the airframe. Many cosmetic pieces were torn off... So you see, it was quite a lot of work, but I managed to pull it off, And now I'm so hyped to have my gorgeous F-18 back!!! :DDDD

Now that the jet flies again, I'll fix the paint and may consider upgrading to Jeti gear. ^^

The crash was a result of pilot error. First, the EDF was affected by FOD so I lacked thrust on take off, which made me accelerate too slow and I run straight into the sun. As I noticed what was happening I panicked and tried to turn away from it only to stall the jet and have it point back AT the sun. The second attempt to turn left was carried out while completely blinded by the sun, and the outcome was the exact same as the first attempt, except now I couldn't control the exit due to lack of direct line of sight so the stall developed into a spin and the jet turned around 180º and dived straight at the ground.

I said she'd fly again, and now that promise has been fulfilled, even if it took me quite a while to get there! :p

    • Airguardian,

      Great rebuild, Sir.

I have used the foam-safe before, but not on this scale.

Good to know you're happy with the results on structure strength.

She is one beautiful Hornet, congrats.

They’re back in stock, I purchased 7 Blue Angels to make the entire fleet

        • My persistence knows no end when it comes to my favorite models. Bought an ARF PLUS and threw the last one's guts into her. I know the tail number is fantasy but it's in honor of my beloved Seattle Seahawks having a fantastic season this year. GO HAWKS!

            Aros,

Ahh, I see and here I thought it was the total number you've owned...

Impressive season for the Seahawks, trust they'll go all the way.

LOL! I wrote that very thing to a friend in text yesterday. It just may well be #12!

              Cheers and thank you friend!

                      • When I took the gear out of mine, the first flight was fantastic. Flew great with less weight, but the second hand toss was a disaster.

                        • I have over 50 flights; had one bad toss but the grass area saved the airplane. Yes, the throw is quite tricky.

What modifications did you do in order to hand toss? My setup was to fortify the main gear inner doors with epoxy but it was still a real bear to grip properly with all that battery weight in the front of my hand placement.

                            • Hand launching an F-18 (90mm) is tricky. Best done with a helper. I used to throw an F-18 for a friend. He had a very hard time doing it by himself while holding a TX.

Yeah that's what I think as well. If it was a 70mm, no problem. The size of the 90mm with the fore battery weight really makes it a challenge to toss it solo one-handed. Ask me how I know.

I agree, I usually have a buddy toss it for me. I have thrown it myself maybe 15 times and it’s pretty nose heavy when I grab to toss it.

I am not as strong as I used to be so I prefer to have a buddy toss it.

                                  I made no modifications.

BTW, since it has a good power to weight ratio, I have wondered if I could put my transmitter on a chair, flip throttle to full, and toss it with both hands straight up, then grab the transmitter. Sounds like a recipe for disaster but heck, it’s a hobby and experimentation is part of the fun! 🧐

                                  • So, the purpose of stripping the gear out and hand launching it is to get a better power to weight ratio, or you have difficulty taking off and landing with the gear?

Having tried this many times in the past, this becomes a bit of a hit and miss, especially for something in this weight category. Good power to weight is only one part of the equation for a successful hand launch. Unless you can robotically and consistently throw the plane the same each time, the tendency for it to roll is high. Most people throw overhand with a bit of a twist. The toss must be fast and straight/level so that sufficient airspeed is obtained for the plane's power system to keep it going. This is where an electronic device comes into play.
The best examples of good hand tossed planes are those from Eflite and Flex Innovations that come with "launch control". You can purchase just the Aura 5 Lite and add it to most planes for the launch feature BUT if you need a lot of channels, you'll lose some features (however, there are ways around this). These will allow you to set your TX down till the plane is airborn. It sets the elevator for a pre-determined pitch angle and the gyro will achieve "level" (roll) very effectively even if the launch is a bit "off". It basically takes off in "SAFE" (or auto level) but with about a 10 degree up incline. The plane will continue in that trajectory until you touch the right stick (mode 2). EG. I can throw my Flex Pirana in any fashion, turn around and walk back to my chair behind the pilot station, sit down before flying the plane. I don't worry about losing sight of the plane because it goes in a straight line till I move the sticks (We generally use a spotter whenever we fly. I don't recommend this for safety reasons, but only state that it's that stable and predictable.)
Flitetest markets this Aura 5 Lite for many of their foamboard plane kits.

                                      • I don't hand launch my EDFs, I have a short bungee that I made 30 some odd years ago for launching slope soarers over the trees up in the mountains here. It makes my launches almost fool proof. I have a Reflex with auto level in my Fafale and it works great, all the others are no gyro. That said I do have a bunch of pylon racers from EFX's to S400 and F5D. A trick for a good throw is to hand a prospective thrower a regular old broom and have them throw it without side arming it. Doing this they easily see what they are doing right or wrong.

                                        • Nice maiden of the ARF PLUS the other day. No gyro activated. Low rates. Still too sensitive on aileron throws so I reduced them a bit more. There’s just something about this airframe/model that wants to be “twitchy”. I think really reduced aileron throws help mitigate that. I may dial in some gyro next time and play with the F modes as well.
