Filling the panel lines and blemishes with Hobbico HobbyLite balsa filler. Super light weight and easy to sand. Check out the RC Geek's tutorial on refinishing a foam plane. I am not going to be doing everything he does but the filler works great. Just thin it down a bit with water and trowel it on. So far I have covered the top of the plane.

Two observations... 1. The first container of Foam Filler I got was great. Stuck well and sanded easy. I ordered a second and it was not the same so I am a little unsure just how consistent it is from batch to batch. The HobbyLite is I think lighter weight and it sands super easy and won't load up the paper. As for painting over the two I think it takes a little more to cover the HobbyLite. I will be priming and sanding after all the fill work is done.
I just used the HobbyLite to make some repairs on my 70mm Hawk after I forgot to screw the vertical fin back in place and it came loose in flight... :Scared:I had to remove it for transport and then plugged it back into it's cradle while taking it out of the car but got sidetracked and took off without securing it. Stupid me. Fortunately though the damage was minimal and I was very fortunate. I am getting ready to sand the filled places smooth and apply paint and will have a better idea then about it.

Thanks Regatoni.... Sanded the bottom and shot a light coat of Rustoleum white primer on the top after wiping it down with a tac cloth. Much of the primer will get wet sanded off. Again, not looking for perfection, just want it to be as smooth as possible for that beautiful blue paint. I am so ready to get the color on it. Man I am really liking the looks of this plane!

Last night I got the first coat of primer on the bottom.
Tonight I sanded the bottom and did a little more filling, this time with Squadron Green Putty followed by a light sanding once it was dry.
The next coat of primer I laid on a little heavier but it covered well. A light sanding and it would be ready for paint. All in all it is a pretty decent finish so far.
I will sand, fill and prime the top once more first though. I am using this primer.
The balsa filler works well and after the initial coat of primer and a sanding the primer covered it easily on the next application.

Color is going on. After a light sanding and wipe down with Denatured alcohol I masked around the tips with Yellow Frog tape. I am spraying through my airbrush the Model Masters Blue Angels blue and Yellow. Yellow first, then the blue, then the Metallic Bright Silver. Before applying the Yellow I checked it against the color of Callie's graphics and it is a perfect match.

Im just closing my eyes and thinking of that rich looking blue on such a sexy airframe, Oh wait a minute, sorry i got carried away with what mine will look like as im doing the Blues also. I seen them in 82' at Sun N Fun in Florida while i was attending Embry Riddle. Having seen the Phantoms also in Cali, i still think the scooters are my favorite. Keep up the great work!!!!! ??????? Did you get Callie to make the Skyhawk/McD motif on the fin?

You want blue? You got it. Two coats on the top. Yes, I got Callie to make the McDonnell Douglas logo. Originally without the Skyhawk II because I could not find a clear enough picture to confirm the Skyhawk II until just recently. She is remaking them for me now with it. I saw them in 1980 when they came to an air how in my hometown of Corvallis Oregon. When they arrived the day before the show they were flying all over town to stir up interest and #6 flew low along a tree lined creek behind my parents house. I could see the pilots visor. I was just a tenager. I keep watching Dreams by Van Halen on YouTube. I agree, it is one sexy airframe in the blue scheme.
