I know that it is not the most cost effective to get new batteries... but the easiest and most effective way to increase performance is to do the zip tie mod and then add a 5s battery. The motor does great with it! The 650kv motor was over heating in my friends plane with the 4 blade prop on it. The batteries were also being punished pretty badly as well. The plane does everything better but still maintains a great flight time with the stock 540kv motor on 5s. Here is a comparison of 4s and 5s.

If you are even thinking of doing the 650 route on 4S you might just as well spend the same motor/ESC money on the new 1500 Razor powerplant.
It is turning a 14" 4 blade more efficiently on that 6S and it scoots. I put it in my P-40B and it had unlimited(past my eyesight) vertical.
Here's what I'm referring to:

CB took the motor/ESC right out of the P-47 Razorback and stuffed it in the P-40. I have personally seen this plane fly and in my opinion, this would have been the hottest plane of the year if it had been released this way. There were at least three of us watching right by Charlies's side when he went vertical at Nefi and we all lost track of it before it stopped climbing. Loops are amazing!!
Definitely something to consider, although I haven't heard of anyone trying it with the P-51, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work.
One other thing, I replaced the prop shaft when I went with the 650 kv with a shaft that Charlie recommended and there is no extra gap, can't remember the stock number but its worth adding to the parts list.

I got thinking about upgrading the motor in BBD to the Razorback motor and running 6s. I already have an 85A Mantis in her so it would be a basic engine swap. So as a matter of interest, I started sizing up what 6s battery would fit in her. I have some 3300's and they seem to be a pretty good fit, the 4000 PRO seems too big. What are you using in your P-40 CB??

On Motions battery page (filter 6S only) the 4500 40C and the 4000 60C Pro are side by side for size comparison.
That PRO is just a BRICK and truth be told is way more C rating than needed for any of your birds(including the Avanti).;)
That 4500 will fit nicely in BBD's batt tray.
Flight times average 8 minutes and you saw my throttle management style on the Warhawk.Warbird Charlie

Good to know, I have a 4000 40c as well, the 4500 's would fit in perfectly with the Avanti as well, thank CB

Just got the FMS 1450 P51 D v8 with stock 540kv motor and an Aspire sound sytem with 2 transdcucers and now choosing a battery. I intend to install the transducers near the cg just to the rear of the battery bay as shown in Andrew's video on Motion RC. I'm not interested in mods for extra performance as I want to fly it scale with the ability to to do scale maneuvers and 5-6 minute flight times or more if possible. After reading this thread, battery recommendations are all over the place, complicated by zip tie and motor mods. I'm looking at Admiral 4s 3600 40c (recommended by Motion RC website for this plane under specs), Admiral Pro 4s 3600 50c, or Admiral 4s 4000 40c. Given my parameters, what would you guys recommend?Comment

The 4000 40C is your best dollar value for giving extended flight time over the 5 dollar cheaper 3600 40C and is the go to Lipo for use in other 1400 size warbirds as well as in the Tigercat and Lightning twins.
I have yet to find a prop warbird that needs a 50C battery and as C ratings increase you pay more for that premium.Warbird Charlie

+1 on what Charlie said. Mine won't balance without using a 4000 G-55 from China Hobby. My 3300s need a 1300 3s battery taped to them to make it cg the same.Don't just fly--WREAK HAVOC!!!Comment

Yep, I prefer the 4000 as well, slowly converting over to them.Lost two 4000's:Angry: at Nefi!!

The Zip tie mod is not going to affect flight time much but will affect the way it flies in a very good way. You will have extra weight with the sound system so the mod will only help. I too use the stock motor and use a Roaring Top 4s 35c 5800mah and China Hobby Line 4s 30c 6200mah pack. The plane flies very scale and for 10-15 mins at full throttle the whole time! Now I also use a 5s 30c 4500mah pack in the plane too. I can get 8-10 mins flight time with that pack...Just got the FMS 1450 P51 D v8 with stock 540kv motor and an Aspire sound sytem with 2 transdcucers and now choosing a battery. Hey ICM, I have a D and a B. The D has a 580 and the B has a 650kv.
If you are going to upgrade the motor, go with the 650. There's not a big difference between the 540 and the 580 and yet not another big difference between the 580 and the 650, so if you really want to notice the change that you invest in, go for the 650 out of the FMS Tomahawk.
Heck, my next step is to try the 6s system out of the FMS P-47. Saw Warbird Charlie's P-40B with the P-47 6s system at Nefi and it was unbelievable! So, if it can work in the P-40, no reason to think that it won't in the P-51.
