It's the F-108 Rapier. It was intended as a package deal with the Rapier not only a an interceptor but as an escort for the Valk. Both used the revolutionary theory of compression-lift where the air frame would ride atop he supersonic shock wave the way a surfboard rides a wave, They used the same materials, engines and flight controls with the only difference being the weapons systems, number of engines, and size.

      • Love the XB-70 as well, but those folding wings would be a real bear to model I expect. Anecdotally— the Valkyrie donated radar and weapons systems to the YF-12 program when it was swept out. XF-108 would be a winner, too.

The NiceSky 70 mm version had it with the wingtips up. It's primary flaw was the landing gear. But theoretically they could do it like the Lindberg model where if you glued them on one way, the tips were don but if you reversed them the tip were even. And speaking of the YF-12/SR-71, the Valk put lie to the supposed top speed of Mach 3, because if the XB-70 was cancelled because it couldn't go fast enough to evade SAMs, then why build a spy plane that only went that fast?

A Prowler would be totally cool. But if they were to ever do it. It is very important the make working air brakes. There is one of the owners of MRC that use to fly in an A-6 squadron. This is the one and only reason we have a beautiful A-6 in the MRC line up, and I actually own an A-6 from MRC. I haven't flown it yet it hangs in my home office, I will fly it some day. But to be honest I'll probably purchase a back up before I head to the field with it some day. The bottom line, until this guy stands up and commands them to make an EA-6B it's never going to happen LOL. To much risk in their minds. Sad but true.

                  • Im not familiar with MRC, but I would think freewing could convert their A6 pretty easy to an EA-6B

I believe officially the airforce only ever admitted to mach 3.2 for the Blackbird. Before my father retired from the Airforce back in the late 90's he worked at Tyndall AFB in FL. There I met a retired SR-71 pilot who told me, the SR-71 could do Mach 3.2 with one engine shut down....

The Valkyrie also scared the bejeebers out of the Soviet Union, prompting them to dump a lot of resources and effort into developing a fighter that would be capable of defending against such a weapons delivery system. An impressive aircraft, particularly considering available technology when it was developed.

Yes, that was the MiG-25's initial mission. And the Soviets ALSO built their own version of the Valk, the Sukhoi T4.

Before I got to see it at the Cleveland Airshow I got to see an SR-71 taking off in Okinawa. And I doubt if we'll ever truly know the Blackbird's top speed, but we do know it could outrun SAMs and Foxbats.

Outrun, and out climb and do it efficiently. The Blackbird had a significant reduction in fuel consumption at cruise altitude at Mach 2.7, something to the effect of 60% more fuel efficient due to the hybrid scramjet engines.

There's a few YouTube videos done by former Blackbird pilots that talk about seeing Foxbats trying to climb up to the Blackbirds to intercept and tumbling out of the sky, due to their engines ceiling limitations, I'm guessing compressor stall. That's saying something considering Foxbat pilots also wear pressure suits!

Hey Woody, you do realize that the Prowler has no ailerons. Don't think I've seen an RC model like that yet. The trailing edge is all flap, except for the wingtip which is speedbrake. I'd buy two, perhaps three. So far I've been able to keep myself from buying an A-6, and turning it into a Prowler. I hope they one day build one for us!!

As for me? I’d still like to see a Vulcan. It doesn’t have to be a quad. A twin will do.
