Got my maiden done today on the rebuild. I got a few things to work out( trim and nose gear) before and during next flight. The first issue was the nose gear. I put the stock screws in for some reason to hold the nose gear in, instead of the longer pass through bolts that go through to the wood plate under the cockpit. So after landing I noticed the nose gear was lose and moving around. As normal no glue was harmed when the put the plastic mount in the foam.
Other issue was the trim added for flaps was way to much and I was having to push the nose down the whole time during final to touch down.
This flight and the next few will be in stock setup. After I get her dialed in I’ll flip a switch and go into RCGeeks setup.
After a few flight in that set up I’ll change the wings to my spoiler and fullspane flap wings. That’s where she will live out the rest of her life.

Not sure how well the airspeed indicator worked. I showed a top speed of 58 mph.

I did notice the new fan units made a huge difference .

You always have a comment on everything, cracks me up, I don't watt nothing, I just fly until they blow, you guys and your amps, watts and all that, I don't have time to check all that stuff anyway, if I sell it this way the buyer knows what he is getting, but you know, last time I flew it I did notice it kind of warm in there when I pulled the battery out...... Don't take me to serious Evan....

    Evan D,
Thanks for the numbers. That is good info! My new Mirage 2000 came with the reversing 100 amp ESC and the 2150 KV. I already had plans on pulling the ESC out because I won't needing the reversing brake with this plane. If it is like my Gripen and Rafale it will land at walking speed in high alpha if I can get the CG back far enough. ;-)

Another option is putting the 12b fan on that 1900kV motor. I put a 2150 in my Mirage and was disappointed, but I was looking for speed. I took it out and put it in my Avanti where it was a noticeable increase and put a 12b on a 1900 and put it in the Mirage and it was noticeably faster.

That said, at some point my F-14 will probably get the 2150's.

    Approximatly
    the 9b 1900 is 98A 2260W
    with the 12b is 112A 2550W
    the 2150 12b is 127A 2860W

On my Tomcat I was able to swap to the new 2150 12 blade units with the set of 100amp escs i bought for the plane with the older fans, so far I haven't run into any overheat protection while flying it in 100+ degree Texas heat. As stated it had a tangible boost in power, not much if any in speed, but it'll make a loop now with all my fpv gear on board and shorter takeoff roll. Use to it would stall out at the top with the older 1900 9 blade systems.

Most all the 80's are changing over to the new 2150 and some, not all, to the 100A reversing ESC. Interesting that they did put in the newer marked 80A ESCs in the F-14. This tells me it will not be going to the 2150's any time soon. Why, I don't know. Could be it's no longer a big seller or it could be they are thinking of a V2 with other updates. I hope it's the later as the TC has been around for a long time and does deserve the update.

Just heard back from MotionRC. They had the warehouse crew check the F-14s in stock. Labeling on the box shows they are still 1680kv outrunners. They are thinking that the F-14 will hopefully be upgraded because the T-33s and Mig-29s are now arriving with the upgraded 2150kv inrunners.

This was not a comment in the video by the video producer. It is a comment in the comment section of the video. Scan down through the comments. This comment has several replies. He sounds honest but who knows. The F-14 in the video has been upgraded to the 9-blade inrunner like our Mig-29s have in them.

I don't watch his videos but my understanding from his posts is he swapped out fans to another brand. But I think Harold is saying a poster on the channel is saying he had bought a new one that came upgraded, not Jon himself.

The site shows the new 80A ESCs and that they are not reversing. It also says it still has the outrunners.

Last, most times if you call a "support specialist" they just tell you what they read on the website. Most don't know much more.

HaroldAnderson, it has been my experience that when MotionRC has a new or UPGRADED product, they announce it once it is in stock or ready for a pre-order.

As for the Freewing Tomcat, it is one of their icons, any upgrade to this particular airframe would not doubt cause quite a stir.

I bought the the ARF+ version of this jet over a year ago, along with the Freewing MiG 29 power system. Might rethink that to add thrust reversing ESC's, we'll see.

I watched the same video you have referenced, good knowledge there, but I do not recall seeing or hearing what power system is installed.

    I should re-watch the vid.

In any event, this jet should be upgraded if it has not been as of this post. It is a beauty.

    Thanks for the heads-up.

    Best, LB

There is a comment on a recent TwoBrosRC YouTube video saying he just bought a PNP F-14 in July and it came with a yellow reverse/brake lead on the throttle cable. He claims it also has the upgraded motors instead of the outrunners. Anyone bought one lately? The guy on LiveChat for MRC said the person must be mistaken. Think he's just a troll or does Motion have a batch of F-14s that are upgraded and they don't realize it?

To be fair the Avanti price stayed the same. One could hope.

I would think so. Since they are moving to the new fans and ESCs I think it’s just a matter of time.

Is there a chance that the Tomcat will be updated like the MIG 29?
