It has been a while since I have posted anything. After looking at my Corsair for 2 years I test flew it last fall. Flys fantastic so I entered in some outdoor static full scale fly-ins that our club was asked to attend. After many compliments on the realistic appearance of my Birdcage I have decided to enter the static competition at the Toledo rc show this weekend. Here are some pictures for my display taken on our dining table. Wife is final painting Lt Ken Walsh, as I type, and hope to install him in the cockpit before leaving tomorrow morning for the show. Hoping to see many scale friends and enjoy 2 days nothing but R/C models.

      Best Regards, Rex

        Rex,

Your 'steed' is a thing of beauty.

        Bravo Zulu, Sir.

I wish you "a smashing good time".

The show is fortunate to have you present, IMHO, and may luck be your friend whatever the outcome.

        Best, Steve

Good for you Rex. One suggestion, try the salt trick on the prop, it's extremely simple and looks fantastic, especially for static display

          1) Get some Kosher Salt off Amazon https://www.amazon.com/stores/page/C...e&ref_=ast_bln

          2) Soak the prop blades liberally with water and spread the salt out on them in 'patches'.

          3) Let dry then spray a very light coat of grey paint, let dry.

4)Dust off the salt and repeat the process.

I did mine twice and the result is great as you can see.

            Elbee,
2 years ago, you got me going on this foamy toy, encouraging me to learn new techniques (cutting into foam on a perfectly good model and using 3D parts). Others enticed me to try pastels, etc. I owe a lot to you guys for bringing back that desire to build and fly scale models. I'm not expecting anything from the show except having a good time and hopefully encourage someone else to step out of their comfort zone and try a new adventure.

            Dan,
I did the salt treatment as you explain, it's very subtle but shows the wear very well. Dave Platt once told me less is better than more for an overall effect.

Elbee, Davegee, Grossman56, F4uausie, I will be thinking of you guys as I nervously un-vail this. Thanks for your advice.

            Best Regards, Rex

Beautiful Dan. Your skills are outstanding. Glad that you and Dave are progressing on P&W Radials and P-47 cockpits.

Well, we just returned from the Toledo Show. A bigger show this year with many more manufactures returning. Swap area was huge with many great deals. A good selection of static models of all categories.
Mike Barbee and Greg Hahn, both advised me on Friday of little things for my docs book they thought would help my presentation. Even though Greg and I were competing against each other he took his time to help a competitor improve. As a first-time entry at Toledo, I appreciate their willingness to do this.
Greg won WW1 and Best of show.

My flying buddy, Mark Truax, won WW2 scale with his 1/4 scale spitfire. He and I both first time entrants. His Model is immaculate.
Yours truly won Military scale at my first Toledo show! Many people said to me how realistic my Corsair looked and amazed it was a foam airplane. I am very humbled to win this award and thank everyone who had input during the complete process from start to receiving this award.

A Childhood Dream has come true.

                            Best Regards, Rex

                                      Dan,

That would be great to see more foam scale aircraft on the contest circuit. I picked up a flyer at toledo that the MINT JULEP SCALE Meet (June 13,14,15,2025, Rosewood, IN) is including a foam scale class to their agenda. I hope to attend.
Next year I hope to enter my Jerry Bates Boeing F4B-4, 90" ws that i have been building over 2 yrs. Yes, the larger models do well in scale competition but maybe I'll enter a tricked-out FW F-4 Phantom in the jet class next year also.

                                      Best Regards, Rex

Rex, I have several 3DP designs I added to my Freewing Phantom "B", that would work well for any variant or model.

Sharper VIRs, vents, A/C intakes, Exhaust nozzles, OEM Cockpit set, OEM Crew ladders, other cockpit parts, "B" Nose Gear Door, tail hook mod, tip light mod and others.

If you go that path, let me know and I'll work with you on adding some 'trick parts'.

                                        Best, Steve

That would be great. I think a FW F4- B or D would do very well at Toledo. I like the Vietnam era B&Ds myself. I think if done properly with 3D parts and realistic paint and weathering it could compete with the larger jets. Not committing myself at this point (need to get my feet back on the ground) but if I do, I'd like your input.
Robin Olds F4-C is in the Air Force Museum should I choose air force vs navy.

Fair enough, Sir. Would like to see your take on a Phantom.
