  • You know, I never thought of the run ups and taxi tests. I have been searching the web for a couple of days and have found nothing. It seems like the only thing I'm finding is just "surface info" with no real substance. I did, however, send an email to Freewing asking them what the MAX current draw on the 80mm 2150kv is. It'l be interesting what they say.

    Thanks.

I thought of that too...Man, that could get EXPENSIVE for a lot of us. I still want to believe that the manufacturers and dealers have done the research and are looking after us

      • Still no word from Freewing.........

Additionally queried Motion's Chat on why recommend a 100 amp ESC for engine which can produce 127 amps draw...No specific data was given: not really helpful to me.

Also no 90mm motor recommendations for their 90mm nacelles...they only said: do not recommend converting to 90mmdue to more weight and less fly time...?

I apologize if I'm offending anyone with these posts. I do not mean to. I'm only trying to increase my knowledge of electric power. I also do not mean to malign Motion in anyway. I'm sure they have done many, many tests on the products they sell. However opinions do not make me feel as comfortable as specific data...My apologies to all.
        Bill

ps: If anyone can direct me to a good source to help me understand more about "hows and whys" of choosing motors and ESC's I would appreciate it.

PPS: Anybody need a 90mm brand new nacelle for a Freewing A-10?

The stock ESC are fine when using the MIG motors. I have over 1,000 flights with SMC hi voltage v2 batteries with no signs of overheating. You should consider removing the heat shrink from the esc so the bare heat sink is exposed to exhaust airflow. Also the ESC do not have a built in BEC so no chance of a brown out. The BEC is attached to the flight battery and powers the esc and receiver. Also suggest you put the ESC on separate channels if you want to do flat spins and crazy acro. Even if you lost a ESC, the a-10 flies fine on 1 motor.

          • I just came in from the shop. when I noticed that the right engine was programed in s HARD STOP...I think it will be smart to reprogram BOTH ESCs...Does anyone have the program specs for the Freewing Opto 100amp ESC's so I can double check them?

Also thanks Paracanary for your info. It makes me feel more comfortable...Not planning any crazy acro however.

            • Well, I joined the A-10 80mm community the other day and am super excited about it!

Got a good price on NIB one here in AUS and decided to give one a crack. I have previously had the FMS 70mm V2 A-10 which was great and flew well but its previous owner had landed it like a Navy F-18 in bad weather so I the wing gear mounts were trashed and needed constant attention. Missed it ever since I sold it!

I'm waiting for some renovations to finish before I putt his bad boy together but I have pulled all the bits out of the box and am impressed with the finish. Some recent Freewing models I have purchased have had a lot of rough beaded foam which was disappointing. During inspection of the parts I discovered that mine has the reversing ESCs fitted! Win.. But it looks like It still has the 9 blade outrunner system.. I'm sure it will still be awesome. Noting how long the power cables are to the motors, do I need to add capacitors or something. I heard it discussed but wasn't sure what they were exactly..

I'm planning to fly her stock before maybe going for the main gear upgrade but I do plan to soften the nose spring and move the CG back like you folks are doing.

              Cheers!

                • I don't visit this thread and just saw this post. Yes, when the 2150 came out a lot of people reported significantly over 100A readings. Interestingly it seems a lot of the latest deliveries of planes with this set up, most notably the new 80mm F-22 pulls way under 100A out of the box and when we change timing (by the TX sticks) to medium we get a bit over 100A, 103-106A. So, FW has done something.

While many reported these high Amp readings, I have never heard of anyone blowing up one of the new 100A reversing ESCs so they must have built in some good head room.

The FETs in our ESCs actually work the hardest at partial throttle.

"Brown Out". A brown out is when the BEC portion of the ESC can't supply the voltage load the radio system (mostly servos and electric retracts) demands from the BEC and the voltage drops to a point the receiver stops working. This was really bad years ago with 3A BECs in the ESCs, worse with linear BECs on higher cell count, more than 3S batteries. Also, with older Spek receivers that stopped working at higher voltages. Now we have 5, 8 and higher Amp switching BECs and receivers can go lower in voltage.

So, bottom line... If you are worried it may be a good idea to put timing on low but really we should put a Wattmeter in line to know how many Amps and Watts we are pulling.

IF I go to WOT for too long AND I have the 2150's at WOT for a while and they ARE drawing 127AMPS like the EVAN D post said am I asking for a "brown out" and potential problem?

                    • Looks like the A-10 has been removed from the Motion site. Could there be a V2 on the horizon?

                      • Surely they didn't discontinue the A-10? Its one of the best EDF jets ever produced if you ask me and I had several of them since they first came out.
If only someone from MRC would say something about that and let us know what's going on because I hate when its all hush hush then SURPRISE....!

Can you shed any light on this, Sir?

It would be a 'cryin' shame to lose this offering.

IMHO, one of the best flying EDF models in the FreeWing lineup and the finest A-10 in the EDF market.

                          • Yeah I seen that but some other jets showed out of stock and then never returned, we need to know on this one, is it alive or "Discontinued"

                            • MRC is not Banana, HH, FMS or HK which do leave discontinued planes on permanent out of stock. One of many things that makes Motion my go to shop.

                              • All I know is those ships are getting slower and slower with parts, I mean we got the SR-71 way before the parts arrived, I think that's a first time that has happened.
Yes MRC has been great to to me, they got my thousands of dollars for my foam habit

                                • No, releasing the plane with no parts has happened a few times lately. SR-71, new 64mm F-86, F-22 70 and 80, panther and the new yellow Avanti…

Some have a spare parts tab with no stock, a couple don’t even have a tab.

When MRC are out of stock I use RCCastle. Very reliable HK vendor and rarely out of stock.

Out of stock means out of stock.

Notify me when back in stock is your clue.
