    • Man I would but I already maxed my R/C allowance from this pay period. Doh!

Sprayed the canopy today with Tamiya's Navy Blue. Ahhhhh. Much better! This is the one. Next step, rivets...

      • Pleased with the results. I have some edge cleanup ahead but overall it turned out pretty nice. I really love the way Tamiya paints go on! Just like Dave said, the paint goes on fantastic. I have to say better than Testor's. Painting the rest of the bird will be a breeze.

              • Thanks! I am trying to figure out how to add strength to the canopy. It's flimsy, not circus-flimsy but flimsy and if it is going to be on a servo-activated mechanism to open and close, I think it needs to be strengthened. I am considering CF sheeting or strips. I just don't want it to be obvious when viewing the cockpit. I can lay down some CF strips or sheets on the inside, then cut and trim to shape and finally paint with the same Navy Blue? Just thinking out loud.

I also need to figure out what to use for the strip that will be on the leading edge of the main canopy that marries up against the front canopy when closing. Thoughts?

                    • Thanks saint, I have seen that article and it's fantastic. Definitely the way to go but since my canopy is already cut I am wondering if I can still apply that CF somehow?

                      • Just tape it back together.

Typically on clear canopy’s I shoot the interior color first, zinc chromate, black, whatever, then exterior over that so the inside is the correct color.

                        • Yes that was a misstep on my part. I should have absolutely done it that way.

                          • I know this is going backwards but what about getting another canopy and using that as the mold for the carbon fiber frame? Then you can always try to cut the canopy even better than the first and, of course, paint the interior first. Just thinking out loud.

                            • Like minds my friend. I will be placing another order soon. ;)

At the very least I will have a backup canopy.

                              • I had the same thought on cutting the 1600 mm Spitfire's canopy, it would need some reinforcement. That would be a great 3D printer project to design some canopy frames.....

                                • 3D canopy frames would be cool if they could be that thin. BTW love the Kid Shaleene avatar. I can just see him on the horse right now. Not to mention his evil brother.LOL

                                  • I stumbled across it by searching 'cowboy icons' and couldn't resist.
I can't imagine Cat Ballou without Lee Marvin. The movie would have been forgotten a long time ago.
The only thing is that its hard to watch "The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance" and take him seriously!
Speaking of old movies, I finally got a copy of 'Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines' priceless!!!

Sorry guys, off topic. The weather is looking good for the weekend so the Spitfire is awaiting her maiden if all is well.....

                                    • Just a minor update...The build continues to creep ever so slowly due to Chris' hectic schedule. Chad contacted me today (Chad's Rivets) to let me know my rivets are ready to go and he will be mailing them off to me tomorrow. The gun sight is still delayed but will be following not too far behind. Since the build is going very slowly I am going to go ahead and prep the fuselage. Sand it down, prime it and then add the rivet detail. Then once the build is done all I will need to do is wipe it down and paint it with the rivets already applied.

That is all. I return you to your regularly scheduled programming. :)
