  • Didn't even know this thread existed. So now I've found another place that I can shamelessly show my work, although most have probably already seen them in specific threads, but you never know, there may be one person left on the planet that wasn't forced to see my photos.

First off is my repaint of the F-18 Hornet into the Canadian Demo version. Took me 3 weeks to just do the cockpit and another 3 weeks to paint and apply graphics. Definitely the hardest re-done I have attempted, especially since I don't have an airbrush. Never would have done this if I hadn't got locked indoors the last couple months and couldn't fly, cause that's a lot more relaxing that doing an exhaustive rework. Have to admit I lost it a few times over the months work, but it's now finished and thank Heavens it is! The video shows a little more detail and the afterburner.

Hugh, I think you'd do it again. Matters not, as it is BEEE YU TEE FUL. Congrats, truly great work. Best, LB

      • The only other 2 complete re-paints I've done, the Stinger 90 (great flying jet but UGLY as hell) and the F-4 Blue Angel, where much easier than the F-18 as I could spray the primer and final color coat with no masking for different colors. Final black on the Stinger and yellow on the F-4 was hand brushed with gloss enamel, then several coats of clear gloss spar urethane over everything as I do on all my planes/jets. As with everything I have, Callie's graphics are a big part. The graphics for the Stinger where images and designs I came up with or found on the internet, then I sent her some pictures and gave her the dimensions I wanted and she did her magic - must better results than what I sent her.

Also attached one of the few videos I have of the planes in flight.

        • One of my favorite re-paints/reworks (not a complete repaint) is the 90 mm F-16. I couldn't decide between 4 different liveries, so I decided to do them all. I made 4 separate tail sections and 6 different nose sections that can be interchanged in minutes out at the field, so I call it my 4-in-1 F-16. Installed the upgraded inrunner and although it already had a ring afterburner, I needed more , so added another LED afterburner to work in concert with the ring burner.

          • So if you haven't figured it out yet, I'm slightly bummed that I'm not out flying so I'm boring the rest of you who are stuck inside with more photos. Although our grass field opened up last week and I got in one great day with 20 flights in calm winds, the rest of the week it got very windy and now, to add insult to injury, it's raining and expected to be windy and rainy for the next week.

I suspect most have noticed with my planes I like to add either yellow or red at least to the wing tips for better orientation cause it seems I'm blind as a bat when the plane gets a little out there in the sun. The underside of the wing tips or elevators will also have a different color so I have a better chance to guess if I'm upside down. It's a wonder I don't crash every time out, but the bright colors helped a lot. The other recurring theme is TEETH. Gotta have teeth, love the teeth, and I don't even have a P-40 yet. So here's some of my various toothy critters, of course thanks to Callie, with teeth on some that really don't necessarily belong there in the first place. Got the pin-up from something I designed with Marilyn Monroe sitting on a bomb, and of course Callie printed it better than what I sent her and changed the dress color for each.

            • The last post, I promise. My wife's "Rhinestone" Apprentice. Still floats like a feather even with all the "Bling"! Now you know where I get all the outrageous paint/graphic scheme's, from my CO and "Chief Designer". I flew it before it got blinged up, now I'd have to put on a dress if I flew it by myself, but she flies it well and so does my daughter, they just make me take-off and land it on the buddy box link.

Wow! Mr. Hugh Weidman! As a Canuck, I have to give you a huge nod of appreciation for going for the one! and recreating the RCAF CF-18 Hornet paint scheme that celebrated Canada's 150 Year Anniversary as a British Commonwealth survivor and a young country still developing and filling up with people from all over the globe; much to my chagrin of course....lol. Anyway, that scheme must have been hugely time consuming as I have considered it myself. Hope it gives you the satisfaction you deserve after such a selfless project....It's a reflection of the Redcoats from 200 years ago when the British Army tried to take North America so long ago.....

                  • AirHead thanks for the compliments. I've wanted to do a Canadian theme for some time as I'm sort of 1/3rd Canuck. I said this before in the F-18 thread, but feel a great kinship with the "Great White North". I had a fly in cabin for 35 years just east of Kenora Ontario and Lake of the Woods. Actually started going up there on fishing trips with my dad when I was 5, then later we got a land grant from the Queen in this remote area and built a cabin. Picked up my love for flying in the old Beaver and Twin Beach on floats. Over the years, became good friends with the bush pilots that flew us in and they'd let me fly, but not taking off and landing. Spent a couple summers flying with them up north of the Circle around Lake Dubawnt north of the tree line in the perma frost catching 60 lb lake trout. To get there, it took 10 hours flying just from our cabin, and sometimes 2-3 days if the weather socked in. So when I first saw this scheme, I knew I had to one day try it. It certainly helped that I was locked in for 2 months and had to work at it almost every day, possibly the only thing ever good to come out of this damn virus.

                    • Papa dots has been at it again and today he finished the HSD super viper custom paint job. We used our 90mm T-45 as inspiration and wouldn’t you know all the scale bits fit perfectly. He got his ruler out and marker and went to town adding all the panel lines and rivets. The tail hook really was a perfect fit and it’s nice because it will act as a skid now (the viper likes to do airobrakeing) anyway check it out the custom cockpit is a must always looked strange without pilots. Another great job papa 👴

Well, Sir, thank you for sharing your rugged and legendary story of your time in the Real North. Fishing in Dubawnt Lake, in Nunavut, is an anglers dream. You're right, the fish there are monstrous and hungry. The furthest North I've been, is near Timmins. The old gold mining town where Shania Twain came from. Compared to where you were, that is way south! lol. I've met Northern folks who learned to fly planes before driving cars. The first Canadian bush plane was the Norseman. They still have an annual Norseman Festival at Red Lake...Happy flying with all of your time consuming and graphically vivid RC creations!.....They look really great!....

Thank you Hugh...this is a FMS model that I bought new at Joe Nall several years ago (4s/3000). After living in a bin under my bench for a couple years (dumb thumbs + tree), I found the replacement parts overseas and worked with Callie on the new scheme. I had that same black plastic Cox .049 Stuka...my brother had the PT-19. Most of the time we couldn’t get the .049 to run so we just spun them around on the control lines!

Your work is spectacular...please keep posting.

After finding the time to put the Blitzworks V22 together, I decided to do a NATO TIGER scheme. A few more details and up she goes! I flew 3 Walkera helicopters before I got into planes, so, I have some feel for the rotor driven part. We'll see....

AirHead an absolutely outstanding paint job. I can't even begin to imagine how you did it or how much patience it took. OK, now I'm dying to know how, did you hand paint the stripes (no way, they're too uniformly unique with sharp edges), or use an air brush or use trim tape (unlikely). Just how the heck did you do such a great job?

I'm honest when I tell you that those tiger stripes were done by hand with a 1/4 inch flat, square brush that has an angled cut to the edge. I went to Google Images and looked at tiger stripes and literally painted them line for line. You should always paint from reference. Although, guys like Bob Ross can paint landscapes from memory. One simply needs to learn hand/eye co-ordination and twist the brush, going from wide to thin and then lifting off at the end of the line. I had a Scottish graphics teacher who approved of a glass of drink before attempting such wild patterns!....I use CREATEX Water Based paints. They are thin, but have heavy solids...
