  • Grossman56,
Dan, I made my pitot from different size aluminum tubing and can remove it to transport to field. Imbedded a 3/4" long alum tube in wing for pitot to slide into. I also added the formation lights (clear) on top of wing. I made brass bushings for my Robart wheel bearings to fit the Corsair retracts and I think I sent some to Davegee. Elbee's last Robart wheel mods are probably the way to go. Believe he used bearings instead of bushings.
I'm glad you have davegee to fly scale with. I have one friend in our club that fly's scale and we currently are finishing 1/4 scale planes to enjoy the many Warbird Meets in IN. next year. Makes it fun to go and enjoy the same interests and the B.S.
    Best Regards, Rex

I've decided to go with "Eight Ball/Dangerous Dan" Click image for larger version Name:	8 Ball.png Views:	0 Size:	54.7 KB ID:	413752I just love the parallel between Dangerous and Dan Gross, I've been called Dangerous Dan on occasions so its a sign!!

Now, I find it interesting that on most if not all the pics I've seen, they don't have the rearward antennae but, of course, they all have the pitot tube yet the only plane I have that came with one is the P 40. I'll have to look through the collection of parts to see if I can find one and see if its the same.
No rush on the instrument panel Dave, just pick a day after 2 and head over.
So great having another Squawker in the neighborhood. I get to see all Dave's great airplanes first hand!

Hi Dan: I think I can come over tomorrow, Thursday Nov 14 after 2 pm to check out what you have so far on your new Corsair. Could you PM your address to me again, please? I thought I had it written down somewhere but can't find it right now.

      Thanks!

      Dave

          • Had a good visit with Dave and got a lot of information plus, he printed me an instrument panel that will be put to good use. I pointed out that the base fuse is the same whether its a bubble top or birdcage, you can see the slight crack aft of the cockpit where the piece is glued in. See the line?

A big thanks to Dave for his help.
Got the 'dots' on the second wing completed last night, time consuming but looks pretty darned cool. several washes of thinned out medium brown and the panel lines stand out nicely. A bit more painting then I'll take the wings off to do the undersides.
Has anyone got a good pic of the actual birdcage cockpit? I'm interested on just exactly how the rear view mirror was mounted in the canopy 'blister'.
Anyway, lots of work to be done lots of fun to be had.
BTW, that video we discussed is on post # 6154

            • Grossman 56,
I think I have a picture of the mirror in the Birdcage version. I will look thru my books tomorrow. I thought I had posted a picture when I was building mine. Glad you mentioned the mirror, I forgot to add it. Rex

              • Thanks Rex, I'm curious to see what it looked like and how it was mounted. I've noticed from the pics that I have that it rolled back with the canopy.
Unfortunately, none of the pics I have or have seen show the mirror, too interested in the cockpit

Hi Dan: I'[m going to try and take some closeup pics of the cockpit of my Corsair so you have some possible options how you want to go on yours. I did totally remove the OEM pilot seat and replaced it with a printed more scale seat and the back frame to mount it onto the airplane cockpit. You can decide how you want to go with this this winter as you're working on it.

                  Cheers

                  • I'll pull the canopy this weekend and get some measurements, What I'd like to end up with is the armor plate panel aft of the pilots seat, the seat itself, the two side panels and work from there. I'll get the sizes off to Elbee and see what he thinks.

Has anyone ever checked these out, they say they're scalable and just look at the detail!

                  • Has anyone notices that in virtually all the birdcage Corsair pictures, there's only one antennae mast? After staring at many many pics, the old brain realized this fact.

I also dirtied up the vest as the yellow hurts my eyes .
Got some shading on the face, I'll try some washes over the flesh color to make him look a little sun tanned as I'm sure the only thing that was white on these guys was under their skivvies.

                            • After hours of fighting with my cellphone to be able to transfer pics, I finally succeeded

The pilot got some final touchups and look pretty passable for a Porcelain Pete!!

I used an eye dropper type thing to add some clear gloss to the goggle lenses and a very small brush to add some gloss to the eyes and the lower lip, about as good as I'm going to get him.

I put some more chalk and painted some 'wear and tear' on the left (port) wing from the 'fold line outward.

Being the 'artsy fartzy' guy that I am, I added some purple, medium brown and a coral pink color as well as the standard black and white. To me, it really adds something that you might not immediately detect with your eye. Back when I was doing portraiture I referred to purple as the color of life because it would make a painting really come to life.
Afterwards I sprayed it with workable fixative. I prefer the Crystal Kote fixative by Helmar because its artist grade and made to lock in things like chalk, not knocking the others like Krylon, but I've had great success with this product. Keep the can at least a foot to a foot and a half away from the airplane and let the product settle on it, rather than close up where the air velocity is going to blow your work away. short bursts are the key, half a second short. It's not hair spray (which is a good fixative in itself) The long process has begun....

She measures out at 90mm so the cockpit width I would guesstimate at 91mm as it will almost stay in place with the existing resistance.
                                Good news so far!

                                • Danger,

                                  Pilot looks great.

I m by no means a figure painter, but if I may make a suggestion, it would be to add some color to his lips.

I'm not saying to add "cfm" red, but a slightly darker shade of flesh tone.

Also, add a light-brownish wash to simulate the beard area.

This really adds to 'fighter pilot look' without a lot of fuss while suggesting maturity.

Same with a few tiny 'laugh lines' around the eyes.

I watched 'ad nauseum' figure painting videos and those were my take-aways.

The other details come from human nature to recognize what we already see in our mind's eye.

                                  Make sense at all?

Anyway, great work IMHO and if nothing else, have fun, right?!

                                  Best, Elbee

                                  • Yes, I am thinking the same thing. Once he was in the cockpit, I realized his clothes were a little too green, which may have been the case when they were new, so a wash of light red/ white will cure that. Greens complimentary color being red, it will turn, for lack of a better phrase, mud. I did the same on my P40 when I mixed the correct green for the green areas, then added red to get the tone and whit to get the hue (shade). I'll see what I can do, stay tuned!
