Finally got to maiden my lumbering beast the FMS 1700mm P-51 with the upgraded EFlight Power 60 470 Kv motor. OMG, it was unbelievable! Got over 7:00 on an SMC HiV V3 5100ma pack. Takes off at half throttle and cruises nicely at half throttle as it used to at FULL throttle. Went vertical at wasn't slowing down at 600 feet so I turned back down as my high altitude altimeter warning was having a conniption fit. I'm sure the motor from the new Flightline 1600mm would also be a decent upgrade, but I can say for certainty that the Power 60 is "The Bomb". Have now idea how fast it was but it sure turned the absolute least favorite plane to fly in my hangar into a real keeper. A Hangar 9 gas powered P-51 could not keep up with me. I know it was extremely fast as from 3/4 throttle to full throttle level flying my seemingly modest aileron rate gain setting of 38% on the gyro was too much and had to dial it down to 22%, unhear of in my stable of WWII tail draggers.

Am I Happy with the upgrade? Like a pig in Still intend on getting the Flightline 1600mm P-51 as it looks to be an awesome aircraft.

Good to hear, Hugh! Back in the day, I used to have the Corsair, P-47, and P-51 in 1700mm size and they were pretty doggy, especially at my altitude of 6,000' MSL. Glad to hear you have success with your new Corsair! Good on 'ya!

      Cheers

I have not read through all 25 pages of comments, my apologies. My Flightline P-51 is a bit of a pooch at full throttle, does anyone have a recommended upgrade to the Flightline 390KV motor? One that has been tried...
        Thanks!

          Hey all,

You know how much I like building cockpits.

Saw this post and link in the 'other' forum.

          Really very cool, IMHO.

Hi Elbee: I went to the link I think you were referring to on a cockpit at the "other" website. When I tried to pull it up, it just came up as a "404" page and never came up with anything on it. Do you have another link that I could use to see what you're talking about?

            Thanks,

              Dave,

Check post number-492 by Flyer Phill.

There is a link that is working for me anyway.

I tried to post the vendor link and it will not open.

I figure it is too long.

Thanks, Steve. I was able to pull it up now. Not right away, but possibly a winter project, I am considering buying a stock P-51 cockpit aside from the OEM one that I fly now, and buy and install the detailed cockpit to see how that comes out. One interesting thing on the gunsight that comes with it, it seems to be a lighted image of the reticle on the HUD, and is a K-14A gunsight. That late model gunsight made it into ships starting in the summer of 1944. I might use that one, although more accurate would be modding my printed N9 gunsight that Danger Dan designed and add the light onto that gunsight to reflect it onto the clear angled glass screen.

It looks to me that you would still need to use a modified pilot (without the bottom half to fit into the cockpit ok, similar to what I did with my 3D printed pilot for my OEM cockpit.

I have seen this modified detailed cockpit interior for sale on RC Castle out of Hong Kong. It is considerably cheaper than Ali Baba, but haven't looked into it that much yet.

I also like the idea of going to a larger, more scale prop similar to what I did with my FMS 1.5M P-47s. The underscale OEM prop on the 1.6M P-51 doesn't bother me, yet, but I might change my mind on that as I get better flying this one.

Yes, at $139 USD it is less expensive, though there will still be duty/shipping to pay.

It is a nice looking unit and saves on the design/printing time.

I have two small orders through RC Castle that still have not arrived. It appears that my first order with RC Castle was June 20. The second one was about a week later than that. RC Castle paperwork shows that it left China within a few days of my orders, but apparently are stuck in customs at LAX since that time. USPS has still not been handed off the packages to get the domestic portion of the trip going. No idea if or when USPS will get my packages to send them to me from LAX Customs. Very discouraging.

I have done a lot of business with RC Castle for many years when parts/airplanes were not available domestically, like MRC. In the past, things moved along pretty well, about 15 days or so. But not now.

Interesting, I have not ordered in a month or so but like your previous experiences, my other four orders from RC Castle this year have come in about 10 business days to South Carolina.

Yes it looks to me like some items that have a high demand due to breakage in flight, like landing gear, for instance, are strategically placed in the USA for quick shipment. That happened to me about the same time when I broke a part on my landing gear for my 1.6M P-51D, and it arrived, as you say, in about 10 days or less from a warehouse in the USA. It makes me think something is amiss with US Customs in LAX, and probably not the fault of RC Castle in China. Who knows? I'll just be happy if I get my drop tank pylons as soon as possible!

Hi guys hope you are all well!!! My flying buddy has now got this plane looks great. He is finding once trimmed or a better explanation may be. It changes trim.. if U set elevator at full throttle at half it dives. So U then retrim it. At full it then rises at full. Any one else have that apparent trouble. Is that called zoom climb??? The f4 does that but very minor only at full speed Chris wolf had a mix in his red phantom

                            f4u,

I am not an engineer of anything, though model aircraft trim issues are something of which we all are familiar.

Is the horizontal stabilizer's incidence the same as the wing's incidence?

Asymmetrical wing airfoil or symmetrical wing airfoil.

                            Just curious.

I get it. My first scale model was a Coverite Gee Bee Model D kit. Symmetrical airfoil and the horizontal stabilizer was parallel (same incidence) as the wing. I was told by one of the R/C pattern aircraft guys that was the issue with trim changes at different throttle settings. I have yet to have that explained to my satisfaction, hence my comments. Could be motor thrust angles, too, for argument's sake. Would be interesting to take a model where the trim settings stay fairly constant and measure the incidences and thrust angles to compate against your buddy's Mustang. Could be something, could be nothing.

Trim settings are only valid at a given CG, speed, and throttle setting. Change any of these, and you must retrim. In full scale aircraft, the pilot groves the trim wheel a work-out. No one setting fits all.

That being said, usually you can find a trim setting that works “most of the time”. Why? Because the designer sets the wing, vertical stab, horizontal stab, prop angle to counter speed and throttle setting changes. Some planes are better than others.

I just create a throttle to elevator mix. About 5% on the -51, if I remember. You want the mix to start at about 30% throttle and reach the 5% down elevator when the throttle maxes. I'll have to go down to the Tx to see exactly what I'm using for this Mustang. ...But, it's late and I just had a pretty busy day. I do this for any plane that does not have a correct thrust angle and can't be easily corrected because of a big spinner. Jets can use this trick too.

Finally got a video of the motor upgrade to the FMS 1700mmP-51. I know this thread is about the FL 1600mm, one coming here soon , but no thread for the 1700mm, so just getting in the way as usual. No idea how fast it is, only that it has loads of power and easily climbs and cruises at 50% throttle. The Mr. RC Sound card works OK, but obviously can't match a MOKI! Landing was a bit crappy, but came in a bit hot since I was used to the old motor having to land around 42% throttle. With this motor, 25% is more than enough to get a smooth 2 point landing.

Saw your vid on ewe-toob and it's excellent.

Love the sight and the sounds.

                                      Really great modification, Hugh.

Logical to the exteme and performs as it probably should have from the OEM.

                                      Well done, Sir.

Wow, late to the party but that 3D printed cockpit sure looks sweet. I wish it would come that way out of the box. I would gladly pay the extra cost if FW shipped them that way.
