  • For anyone considering converting your B-24 to a F-7B, here is a new scheme, Cherokee Strip!

Built by Consolidated as B-24J-150-CO. Converted to F-7B photographic reconnaissance Liberator. Delivered to the U. S. Army. Ferried overseas via Hawaii to the South-West Pacific Area. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force, 6th Photographic Reconnaissance Group (PRG), 20th Combat Mapping Squadron (CMS). Nicknamed "Cherokee Strip" with the nose art of a woman wearing an Indian head dress.

This aircraft flew 106 combat missions photographing enemy targets in New Guinea and the Philippines.

On April 21, 1945 took off from McGuire Airfield (San Jose) on Mindoro Island on a test flight. During the flight, the engine caught fire and the bomber crashed into the sea northwest of San Theresa village on Mindoro.

I had the paint colors scanned and made at home depot. Then I took the underside light grey and mixed it like 50-to-1 water to make a wash to cover the topside.

Made long streaks with a paper towel.

So far I've done all my weathering on my airplanes with the air brush. I need to start trying the wash approach. I just wasnt really sure how exactly to mix it, or even what to put in the mix. Thanks!

The engine exhaust was done by an Airbrush.

                  • Tupelo Lass from the 93rd Bombardment Group, 409th Bomb Squadron is RTF but I'm just finishing up with the livery and waiting on some warmer weather . The 93rd was one of the first groups to go over in 1942. There were a lot of variations in the tail livery from the start of the war throughout the duration. Tupelo Lass was an early D model in Ted's Traveling Circus and a Ploesti ( Operation Tidal Wave) survivor. Made it back to Benghazi safely then back to home base at Hardwick a few weeks later Was banged up pretty badly on return from the Dansig mission and salvaged.

Dad was a crew chief in the 409th BS which in today's terms would be an A&P. Tupelo Lass would have one of the planes he worked on. Been working with the historian from the 93rd for which I am a member to try to nail down the livery. I have not yet repainted the red cowls nor have I started weathering. Need to borrow an airbrush for the superchargers. May just weather the red cowls to a point where they look they were red a one time. I'm 100% positive the early D models did not have red cowls. All of the early D models coming out of an San Diego had the greenhouse nose with the Sperry S-1 bomb sight. Norden came about little later in 1943. The Emerson Turret didn't appear until 1944 and was included on B-24's coming from all the B-24 factories except for San Diego.About 3,000 parts went into making one. Wow!

The early circa 1942 D variant featured a large capital letter with a round white background. In this case a B. That was their radio call letter. Underneath that would be the serial number and underneath that would be a smaller capital letter with either an overscore or underscore line in the case a Q. It wasn't until later 43-44 that they went to the colored v-stabs with either a vertical or diagonal stripe . The serial number, not including the year was placed on the inside of the v-stabs. These early entries did not have the two block letters placed on the aft fuse either.

Mine probably won't be entered in any scale contests but will at least look the part and capture the full scale Tupelo Lass for the most part. . What I really like about this plane is that you make mods in stages as time allows. I want to add lighting similar to what Brandenmoon has done with his. Retractable landing , nav light and formation lights. That's a lot of wiring. I already have the V.1 MR RC Sound system installed with the dual row Wasp chip.

I like em' and can see them being used for other projects but unfortunately no specs are provided as usual( I know.....per MRC's prior disclaimer :()
So now I'm calling on the other modding parts-meister as well as bomber guru TI to get us some published specs.
Strut length - axle to top, strut diameter and wheel/axle diameters.
                        Whats the prop diameter too??
                        Thanx in advance bud....... ;)

Propeller is 3 blade 9.5x7, nose wheel is 69mm / 2.71in, main wheels are 85mm / 3.34in, stock mains are for 4mm axle but the new main wheels are for 5mm axles...not sure on the struts, I probably won't use them at least not on the B-24 ;)

Thanx for the wheel info. The main is basically the same tire as on the FW Stang with different/appropriate wheel.
I just know you'll end up with a set of those struts for something, so when you do spill your guts on the specs if some hasn't already done so in the mean time.

                                    • Well i finished up the main paint, did a mock up assembly and applied the decals. I still have to do some more painting and detail work but she's about 80% complete. In the very near future i'll need to get a more detailed cockpit and do something with the nose as well as make some scale .50 cals for the waist, nose and turrets. Also left is the APS-15 Radome to replace the ball turret. Still a lot of work to be done but here she is. (again dont mind the mess.)

The robart is softer if you need it...and it is more scale.
