Elbee, Davegee, Grossman, f4uausie, myself and others have been posting since I painted, modified and weathered my FL Corsair 3years ago (has it been that long) and I have gained a lot of ideas and techniques working with foam from them. I consider them my best internet friends and feel we are like a lot of guys sittin around watching football and ribbing each other drinking a beer.
Wife is upset with me. She suggested I get our dog a X-MAS present so I asked the manager at the meat market if he had a big bone. I wrapped it up, put it in a box and put it under the X-MAS tree next to my big box Now our dog is pestering the wife to give the present to him now. She's accusing us of being just alike. GO FIGURE!

    Best Regards, Rex
Maybe your dog knows the score with your wife and waiting to open your present on Christmas Day. If so, he'll probably want a piece of the action (measured in delicious dog bones) if you get any early clearance from the Boss to open it a wee bit earlier than then!

Have fun, regardless. It will be a fun project for you, and we will all enjoy helping in any way we can to see that it is the best work you have done to date!

    Cheers

    • Thanks Dave, I am making a list of things I want to do on this and looking forward to you experts in guiding me in the right direction.

Dog and I are both working on her now. When the big day comes it's going to be a race to see who can open their present first.

      Best Regards, Rex

          HM,

I am quoting you and including Aros in the reply.

Hi Rex: have you yet decided on the paint scheme/markings for your aircraft? If so, I could do a little independent research that might be helpful with some upcoming detail directions.

              Thanks

I like to keep things lite, loving the humor. I did receive a notification for this post, so it seems to be working again. Thank you to who ever or whatever digital magic fixed it.

                • Handyman220,
Glad you got it fixed. Please join in with our group and enjoy whatever Elbee has up his sleeve for these last few days of the countdown. Our banter makes the winter months less monotonous, and I get ideas and detail help from these guys. Doesn't get much better than that!

                  Davegee,
Decided on Bob Johnsons, LUCKY, Looking on Hyperscale I found profiles on (4) p-47s that Bob flew. It states he scored most victories with LUCKY. Their profile of Feb 1944 shows a O.D. with Red nose. Looking at some model pictures shows Lucky w/white nose and white stripes on tailplane. So undecided! Both would look great.
I'd like to add landing light, camera, air intake in wing. Detail inside of wheel well, add l/g retraction rods, ring sight in front of windshield, gunsight, Armour glass, detail engine, etc.
As Johnsons LUCKY didn't have the wing pylons, when I choose to, I want to use magnets to hold the pylons on.
, Dave I keep looking for info on LUCKY But real pictures of the complete plane are far and few.

                  Thanks for your help, Rex

Sounds good, Rex. Good choice. Yes, I show he got his first kill in Half Pint, 21 kills in Lucky, 3 kills in ALL HELL, and his last two in Penrod and Sam, which is the one that I did in silver showing 25 of his 27 kills. Once he got those, he was commanded back home from battle, and as we all know, Gabby Gabreski caught up with and surpassed Johnson by one kill, totalling 28.

In February 1944, they started painting ALL the cowls red on the three squadrons of aircraft at Halesworth. It's probably a good bet that Johnson, being "Big Man on Campus" as the top scorer, had his plane painted right away, at least the nose. I'll include again a picture of Johnson, Zemke, and Mahurin taken sometime in the February-March timeframe with Lucky in the background. Although you can see the photo is a B&W one, the nose cowl is no longer white, but red.

                    • Davegee,
I have that picture too. I did find a full view of Lucky with the white nose and tail stripes. Thinking I'll make that call after I get the OD painted. I feel that Lucky would show some fading of paint on the upper surfaces and I will need your advice on how to do that (shading). Will order Callie's decals after X-MAS. My to-do list keeps getting longer.

                      Best Regards, Rex

Hi Rex: could you post or send me that pic of Lucky with the white stripes for my files? I don't think I've seen that pic before.

I'm having trouble downloading pictures from my phone to my computer, need to get grandsons help. Can't have this problem with a new build coming in a few days. Moved the dog and my presents today, his eyes got as big as saucers when he thought my bigger box was his. LOL

PM me your phone # and I'll text the picture

Those women really helped our war effort and had to be very talented to fly different aircraft. I understand they mostly paid their own expenses. Most were good looking also.

                                • Doing a little research and found that some P-47s had the retractable landing light outboard of the landing gear whereas others had it close to the left side of the landing gear. A moot point but if I'm planning to add this, I'd like to do it right. Does anyone know where I could find this information on LUCKY?

I can get you more info, but from my research these early P-47s had the landing light behind the left wheel bay. Later models, especially the -30 bubbletops and beyond had the landing light relocated to the outer left underside wing panel. Your "Lucky" was an early -5 RE (Built at Republic on Long Ilsland, NY) and would have had the landing liight behind the left wing wheel well.

                                    • Great Davegee, Thats where I will make mine, next to the landing gear. I know I read that, but it didn't say which model batch. Do you remember what diameter lens you used for the scale size?

                                      Thank you, Rex

Hi Rex: I just took a pic of the bottom of the left wing on my Penrose and Sam, the last plane Johnson flew before being sent home with 27 kills.

For these foamies, I don't bother with an actual functioning retracting landing light, so I have been using a 1 inch diameter flashlight lens instead. I remove the plastic lens, and the silver reflector cone behind it and the light bulb that comes with it. I have to carve out a cylinder that diameter and am sure I don't cut too deep and dig through to the Top of the wing! But it has worked fine in all the cases I have had with four of these FMS P-47 Razorbacks.

The placement of the landing light on the model should be very close to the actual spot the light would have been placed on the real thing. I'm not sure why Republic decided to change the postion of the landing light to the left wingtip so late in the game. But starting with the -30 series models through the M and N models near the end of the war, it did change to that location.

                                        Cheers

I just have an old flashlight w/ 1" lens, so I am collecting parts. My beautiful wife may not see much of me after Christmas day. Guess she can always come to the shop and ogle my creative project. She would have to be quiet while 12 O'Clock High plays on the tv LOL
Did you make your mirror or use one you purchased? Just planning ahead.
