Dude!!! LOL Made me smile. I just hate to have to do "surgery" on the pilot when he gets here. I know it has to be done, but it just feels wrong to cut him in half!!! ;)

WC, We get by there some, I will drop by next opp. As for the Connie, went to Pomona CA via LAX as a kid via a Connie out of ICT. I thought it was the greatest thing in the world. I remember how big it was and how noisy, but loved it. beautiful airframe. Also, it has the same 2 beginning consonants as CORSAIR. LOL Anybody thinking of doing the folding wing mod? I thought about it for about 2 seconds, but ya never know. I understand that there is/was another 1600mm Corsair that has that feature. Not certain if it would be worth the time. Best, LB

Yeah, the banana hobbies (LX) Corsair has that feature but I would do some research before I pulled the trigger on that. There's video of it functioning too but allot of their "inovations" are pretty sketchy. Just sayin".

I bought the LX wing-folding Corsair and it was utter garbage. The retracts were next to useless and the wing fold mech was, well, "bleck". Nice looking, great idea in theory but the execution was horrible.

Now this is AWESOME!!!! Thank you much for sharing. One thing is clear, back in those days you had to really be a pilot and "one" with your aircraft. Not that pilots today aren't real pilots but take away all the technology and computer controls I wonder if they could fly this bird like the old timers did? Another observation that always amazes me about yesterday's pilots is the size of the cockpit. If you were over 6" I don't know how you could fit in the cockpit especially if you have broad shoulders. Not sure if true but I was told once if you were tall you'd have the seat so low you'd feel like you were laying down. I'd have to take off my cowboy boots for sure to fit :)

Yes sir. They are smooth & Y to the rudder channel or one of your choice for control...

I believe James Howard’s crew chief for P-51B Ding Hao modified the seat and moved it aft as Jim was very tall.
Cockpit drill with your eyes closed was very important to pilots so you would not have to look for a control, just reach for it.
The thing that hurt low time pilots was during extreme climbs and dives in dog fights, trying to learn to adjust manifold pressures and rpm. Hard to watch your opponent and look inside a cockpit to check a gage in high g maneuvers.

Looking at the instrument panel all they had in the Corsair to navigate was a basic magnetic compass and the ADF “automatic direction finder” in the middle top row which was all that existed at that time. Not to big a deal in the USA as there were plenty of NDB’s “beckons” and AM radio stations to guide yourself but in the vast Pacific you certainly had to be on your Nav game and hope the instrument panel didn’t get shot up.
