Official Freewing 90mm F-4 Phantom II Thread

I put the FW YAK 8S system in my F-4 with a Castle Creations 200A ESC. It had 6.2 lbs of trust with 2, 4S, 5000mah, 70C Roaringtop batteries. After I cut out the cheater hole, it 7.7 lbs of thrust. It will be interesting to see if the stock 8S F-4 will have cheater holes. The test stand did produce 7.7 lbs of thrust just running the EDF but did not produce that thrust when the complete airplane was tested on the stand. It did show 7.7 lbs of thrust with a digital fish scale at the field. Does anyone have experience with the Lander test stand?
My F-4 flies great at 5,800 feet and it is fast. You never have enough power!4 Photos

That's awesome! I wanted to stay at 6s to use my existing batteries.. So the FMS unit fits the bill here at 500ft ASL. I put in one flight 4:30 on a 6s 5000 with 3.74v/cell on landing. Not bad. And it takes off like a scalded dog. Vertical is limited by eyesight. Just what I wanted. I now have 6 flights on her. My favorite jet!
That being said, the sound is good but quiet. It doesn't have the whine of the 9 blade. And it sounds a little more jet-like on approach and on takeoff. But it's quiet. I guess the cheater really makes a difference in the sound department.
I do not have any way to really judge the speed yet. It seems pretty fast. Maybe not as fast as the Scooter. I don't know.
We have a club member who is getting the stock 6s system. I am interested to see if there is much difference in sound or performance between his stock fan and the FMS fan. I can't wait to have two phantoms in the air.
Overall I think the F-4 is a great plane. I do not like the glued-in servos. But aerodynamically she is awesome. And rugged. The paint is ...well, I don't like it. Mine will get repainted eventually. I wish they offered a Navy scheme.Meridian Aeromodelers, Meridian MS

Well had my maiden flight today and it was a blast. Started the day off wrong by balling up one of my 3d planes but after calming down with a few flights on my heli I decided to give the F4 a shot. it flew really well, I had to give it a bit of up trim (more then the book states but after that it flew like it was on rails. Took off and landed on grass with zero issue. BTW what kind of expo are most people running? I had mine on 40% and it was still a bit twitchy (could be because I am a heli pilot). Regardless I would recommend this bird without hesitation. The Admiral battery worked fine but I think something with a bit more C and capacity might be a bit better.

I am running 30% expo with book value high rates. Works for me. I do not find her to be twitchy at all. You might consider taking some elevator trim out and moving the battery back a little. Mine flies with the 8mm setting hands off.
Also she likes to drop the nose in a slow turn. Counter that with power and less bank angle.

I recall Pilot Ryan giving us the same advice. He said he got burned a couple times. Sounds like she requires sweeping turns at a low bank angle with speed. I think he even cross controls his turns to keep them as flat as possible. I have done that with a lot of birds myself. Looking Good, Paul. That's exactly why I need a couple of those attachment clips. I snagged a set of those missiles from the 70mm F-16, and I'm looking at possibly adding a "belly-tank". I would prefer to have the clips instead of magnets cause let's face it: Warbirds fly with ordanance, RIGHT ? I found them and of course they are "out of stock". WISH LIST....!

Easy on the crossed controls thing. Sweetheart that she is, she is still a swept wing jet. Crossing controls at low speed, high alpha, and low altitude can lead to an NGS. (Not Good Situation)

You could use a separate battery for these loads. I like to use a 2 cell LiFe to power the RX and servos when the motor and ESC use 6S or higher.FF gliders and rubber power since 1966, CL 1970-1990, RC since 1975.

That's what I was thinking, 800 mah battery pack and 5800 mah for the fan. Might help stretch it s bit.
