I'll be awake for that one. Saw some cool things at DM AFB. That's how I got the A-10 bug. First A-10 kit was an LX and that was 6 years ago now when I was with Customs and Border Protection aviation branch. That jet is still flying, but not off grass. Also spent some time with now Congresswomen Col. Martha McSally.

Much appreciated Tim, and back at you! When I first flew Hogs at Myrtle Beach in the early 80's, we didn't even have an ILS on the jet! Many's the time I entrusted my pink heinie to you calm cool and collected Controllers to talk me down through the soup on a PAR approach to sweet terra firma. Exit cockpit, remove G suite, extract seat cushion from rectum.Originally posted by ColtPilot View Post
That's what I'm talking about. Nice play by play. Now I can talk you into an ASR, PAR or ILS approach or strictly VMC. Retired Navy Air Traffic Controller. Got your six and as always, thanks for your service. I have a couple of the A-10 pilots here in Michigan wanting me to build their B1RD with their side numbers and have done so. More to build. Change to departure, good day.

That would be awesome to hear. I meant to ask what prompted you to almost have to pull the ejection handles when you mentioned it the other day but got sidetracked. I have for sure been contemplating the speed brakes. Maybe after all my other mods are done. ;)Originally posted by Legman01 View Post
Yeah, you could "aero brake" with the Hog to some degree, not quite as much as the F-15/16s do. It does make for a prettier landing to hold the nose gear off a bit and then let it down slow, and this is what most of us did at our AF bases with long runways. It's all about looking good, right ;). But if you had to land it on a short runway, best not to dink around finessing the nose wheel down. Running off the end ain't so pretty! The brakes are more effective in a three point stance. The great big barn door split aileron speed brakes are also deployed to full open on touchdown and do a great job on the initial speed reduction on landing.
If someone could model those speed brakes on this bird, that would truly be awesome! Brandon? Steve? any takers?
BTW, I grabbed for the ejection handles twice during my 10 years flying the A-10, didn't pull either time. Once was on takeoff. Some evening when I've had enough beers, I'll tell you guys that particular bedtime story;)
ATTACK!

A guy from Canada did the speed brakes to a LX A-10. They work, but mostly for show.Originally posted by RCjetdude View Post

Yeah, I talked to Alpha about that some months ago and he said it wasn't practical to have that kind of detail for this size plane. I have talked to Pogo about it several times and his friend is the one who did that detail......pretty ingenius setup. It's posted back aways on this thread. I haven't given up on the idea but will probably wait 'til flying season is over to tackle it along with the functional canopy and cockpit access ladder. BradOriginally posted by ColtPilot View Post

I saw Eric (from Canada) fly his LX A-10 with the split aileron today, actually. I can tell you the split aileron is 100% not just for show. The plane slowed right down when deployed, and zoomed away when retracted.Originally posted by ColtPilot View Post

I agree, only saw it on video at their beautiful field but they looked pretty effective to me, and if they weren't, so what, it's all about the presentation right? Otherwise why would anyone bother with powder canons, nav lights, etc. BradOriginally posted by Racer686 View Post

I have developed a functioning flare system that i will apply to my A-10. It's only on the prototyping stage yet, but looking forward to get it on my jets. :)Originally posted by Legman01 View PostAnother great mod for this jet would be working flares (yes, I know it's probably illegal). I've actually done this many years ago with a Roman Candle strapped to a Sig Kobra, and it looked great. This could be mounted in place of the ECM pod. Just say'n ;)
